I just got shit on hard. I just got done with a pretty big project and the song released today, to my suprise all of the audio on the youtube video is in mono...
Label owners wont swap the video because if they lose the views for a few hours their tight asses might lose a few pennies from the ads they get paid from. Therefore, My reputation gets shit all over and everyone goes about their day thinking it was just some shitbag who mixed the song and can't differentiate mono from stereo. These things make my skin crawl. I can't explain how pissed off I am. </rant>

You have no idea how many times this has happened to me, hopefully people will just blame it on "bad youtube quality." Sucks.

Let me add that if anyone being myself or my manager posts a comment on this video letting people know that there is a problem with the audio.. the comments are deleted. Its almost as if someone is purposely trying to make my mix sound like shit and there is nothing I can do about it. AGHGHGHGH

you're lucky it's only on the YT vid!
A prettty nice mix I did last year was for a band who released a video with every single song, so they essentially released an audio-DVD...whoever authored that DVD fucked up big time...every single song on it is in mono...and that's the official released DVD, ot just some YT vid....
video guys are retarded and half deaf!

Does YT allow you to replace the audio for a video after-the-fact? I thought I had seen some sort of option like that for a video I posted once, but it's been a while so I could be mistaken.

If your mix falls apart in mono, it wasn't a great mix to begin with.

Just my two cents.

Im not sure if being in mono is what the problem is, it just sounds very mono'esqe. Something went TERRIBLY wrong somewhere in the file conversion/export process. It just blows me away that the label won't even TRY to change out the audio or re-upload the video.

Some of you guys need to chill out about critiquing his mono compatibility and recognize the situation. Even if a mix holds up perfectly in mono it's still reasonable to want/hope/expect that your mixes will be presented the way you mixed them whenever possible.
YT certainly supports stereo so SFH's point stands: the label should logically present the best sound possible since that's what they're trying to sell.

completely agree with this.

No one should have to mix in mono anymore.
I think its as relevant as ever to test mixes in mono consiering that alot of pople these days use thier TV which a surprising amount of are still mono and the speakers on Iphones etc, iphone docks even etc, puls the benfit you get from hearing and figuring out how to separate elements without spatial separation

If it is any consolation it still sounds awesome even if the guitars sound faint. And judging by the comments people still like it or don't notice. It sucks though that they won't swap the audio but more incentive for me to buy the song so I can hear it in stereo right?

A couple weeks ago I asked a bassist I was recording if his headphone mix was in mono like mine was for some weird reason. He said "no, sounds fine to me", so I put on his headphones and to my prevail, it was in mono too. :bah:

So fear not. Most people won't even know (not even "musicians")

No offense taken from the mono warriors, as it is still very good advice. I experimented a bit more with stereo widening on this particular mix which I believe aided in the destruction of the sound when it is played mono. It seems that the listeners are catching on that the video had authoring errors and not mix errors, which makes me feel alot better. Spotify and iTunes have the song in full quality so I guess it's just the YouTube version that sucks.
