Is it worth getting a 5150 over a 6505?

So I'm looking around, and I see some used 5150s going pretty cheap. I don't have the cash really to buy it right away, but with a little magic I guess I could pull it off.

OR I could just wait a few months and save up and get a 6505, brand new. But I keep hearing about how awesome the original 5150s are, and how they are definintly superior to the 6505s. Is there any "real" differance, or atleast enough to warrant me going slightly bankrupt over one?

They are the same amp...same components, same circuitry same everything except the name on the front.

Same amp, the only differences are stock tubes (and that includes those infernal block-letters that ebay sellers love hyping endlessly). And I think having a 5150 would give you more street cred than a 6505, so all other things being equal, I'd go for the 5150 ;)

6505+ - thats what i went for. They are the same amp but i felt better when i got to cut open the brown box with peavey written on the side. you never know what sort of a mess your getting into with an old tube head. it truly is a crushing amp on your pocket & tone wise. well worth the euro's...for you though prob. dollars and a bit cheaper. (got dam yanks)

No it's kronor for me! (Swedish) But it's still pretty damn cheap here, (The 6505 I mean, everything else is hella expensive!).

living in Asia is even worst!! cant get any musical instruments cheap here!! ur $600 is like around $2000 singapore dollars.. including shipping and other taxes for tht amp!! fuck man

They consistently go for about $600 in the US.

$600us = 418eur = 641cad = 857sgd = 330gbp

So a 5150 would cost me $600 here, or $541 in Canada, using USD. Damn Canucks!

Is is worth the extra money to go for a 6505+ rather than just the standard 6505?

I have read alot of people talk about how its just not completely the same as the 5150's lead n crunch tones. However i would say, if ya like and use cleans alot as well.. go for it since it does have a way better clean. My 5150 almost always distorts a little in clean channel, because i have to have it loud, and my 5150 doesn't do loud n clean :headbang: I really don't give a fuck though!

If you like its tonal characteristics. The two models are voiced slightly differently. I prefer the original 6505 (5150) greatly.

I think the 6505 heads are still going for about $2k here in Oz. Shameful. Unfortunately our dollar has bottomed out again so ordering from the states is becoming less and less viable.

The II is gainier, and less warm sounding in my experience. That is about it. The original is warmer and has a very distinct sound to it, very smooth in it's distortion.
