Is Megadeth Speed metal or Thrash?

I think Painkiller is much closer to power metal.

I recall back in the day, playing the album to a couple of acquaintances of mine (who were deep into extreme metal), and they said to me something like "fuck JP sounds like Helloween".

I was kind of annoyed because I think they used it in a derogatory way LOL

Tribalism in music is never not totally retarded. I know many older metalheads who are only now discovering the less heavier stuff because it was considered wimpy in their "scene" when they were young.

I'm currently experiencing this. Most of my friends liked way heavier shit and I was trying to keep up, and I missed out on a whole lot of classics.

Thrash metal:

Fast tempos
Tempo changes
Unconventional styled riffs
Intricate rhythms
Blastbeats
Harsh vocals
Gang shouts
More active guitar tone
Midtempos are acceptable

Speed metal:

Exclusively fast tempos
More conventional rhythms
More emphasis on melody
More likely to have clean, operatic vocals
More relaxed riffing

Megadeth clearly fits in the thrash metal category. Speed metal to me is Motörhead, Judas Priest, Annihilator, Anvil, etc.
