first 4 albums are legendary, seasons is very good and divine intervention is acceptable - their last album was mediocre, the 2 albums before that were atrocious

metallica 1st 4 albums are also legendary, I don't understand how anybody can say those are overhyped

I agree with this, pretty much. Except I think Seasons and South of Heaven are really, really boring.

I don't care what anyone says, Slayer puts on one hell of a show! That's why you hear the chant of, "SLAYER, SLAYER, SLAYER", at concerts they're not performing at.

But using that logic, wouldn't that make "Freebird" a much better song than it actually is?

but in those 20 years they hve failed to write any more truly good music... so I would say yes, they are washed up and have been for quite some time.

This does not demenstrate the band is not being washed up musically just because they decide to record a concert featuring only their own songs.

I rarely listen to either anymore and both bands sounded cooler when 13. Both bands have not released anything good for like 20 years anyways. It's understandable if people find them overrated or do not care for them period. Both are good in the 80's. I do not hold either up very high in music or anymore at all.

So why not stick with the 80s stuff? It doesn't get worse as you get older... I still hold my first metal album (Ride the Lightning) in extremely high regard and I recently got it on wax to complete the unholy trinity (cd/tape/lp)

No, because however those bands have evolved or de-evolved in recent years they have a string of undeniably classic metal albums. You can go on and on about how this or that band is so much more sophisticated or artsy or brutal or whatever than old Slayer and Metallica... but for classic riffs, arrangements, songwriting and just kickass metal in general it really doesn't get much better than albums like Hell Awaits or Reign in Blood, etc. Of course you are probably a youngling so I should excuse your ignorance and leave you to your awesome Racer X albums.
