Is there much different in sound between digital and analog processing?

If someone wants to drop money on outboard I always suggest quality microphones, preamps and conversion before anything else. Those are certainly more important than any outboard compressor or equalizer.

Eh, mics and preamps yes, but if I had, say, a Fireface 800, I'd sooner get an outboard compressor (especially for master-bus or on-the-way-in use) over some Lavry or Lynx

sure.

I`ve stated many times my opinion on the importance of conversion vs. mics/pres and processing.

but... if you are sending your mix out to an analog compressor, then back into "the box" I would think having optimum conversion would be advantageous.
