Is TOOL metal?

prog isn't only about strange time sigs! I just listened to Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' out of my dad's collection, and after hearing this I can definately say they're prog. Not too many strange time sigs but really experimental, just like Tool. Tool can be really psychaedelic at times and I think that's also a proggy-factor

Art-Prog-Alternative-Metal.

Anyone who doesn't think Tool is progressive probably just doesn't know what progressive is. People think prog and instantly assume Rush and Dream Theater, but that's only half right. Progressive isn't a sound, or even a style, so I don't even think it should be considered a genre. Music is progressive when it sounds like nothing that has been done before, is one step ahead of modern music, and doesn't follow any of the "rules" of typical songwriting. All of these are Tool.

I'm not sure what to call them, but they are one of my favorite bands... (along with many others, dream theater, opeth, in flames, etc.) They arent Prog and they arent quite metal. They have a hell of a lot more talent then nu-metal though thats for sure. Its very evident in the drumming. Danny Carrey does rank up there with Portnoy and the likes. The guitar is defintely not very complicated, but its far from the generality of nu-metal. The riffs are creative and very originial, although easily to replicate. The singing is some of my favorite singing in any band, I dont know how to classify it, maynard is just a great singer. The bass is about the same as guitar. I hate when they are categorized with stuff like deftones, becasue they are really a lot different. Kind of like radiohead in an alternate universe.

I agree with the post above me as far as categorizing goes.

I'm ressurecting this old thread to state my opinion...

I believe that Tool's Opiate seemed as a heavier grunge album. I have seen Alice In Chains often referred to as metal so why not Tool who are certainly heavier than Alice In Chains?
If we didn't have in mind progressive metal bands as they are today (Dream Theater, Symphony X etc) and as they have created progressive metal sound (which some times isn't progressive at all, since many progressive metal bands -especially new bands- sound alike), we could say that Tool are progressive metal since their music is definitely a progression!!!
Well, I believe that Tool have created their own sound which cannot be labeled. I have cought myself many times thinking that this band or that band sounds "Tool-ish" without being able to classify these influences to a specific musical genre, just "Tool-ish"!!!

Oh, and allmusic.com says they are Alternative Metal, Heavy Metal.

I Heard Tool Won Some Metal Award On Tv.
That Immediately Makes Them Non Metal.
As Of My Opinion, I Think That Tool Are As Metal As Your Grandma's Dick.
(and If That Happens To Be Metal Then Disregard)
