Its tax time and I've got g.a.s.

Anyone have experience using Line 6 Spider Heads? More specifically, Spider II.
I'm looking to invest in an amp and I came across a deal for one that was pretty affordable and I'm tempted to pick it up to start jamming live again.
Anyone?

I'd say avoid the Spider series stuff, sounds pretty crappy to be honest.
If you can score a Peavey Vyper, they are way better modeling amps.

Line6 sucks and will suck monkey balls in heaven......

Did you ever think about why it's called Line 6....that SIX is suspicious.

Now you got those commercials sayin' "this is our line ONE product and top of the line product!!!" and "our first in line product...."

This m8s is LINE 6 and when it will become (if that'll ever happen) LINE 1...I'll try it again. :D

hahaha

:kickass: cheers guys!!!
I've actually been scoping out some lesser known (to myself, anyway) brands of non-modeling amps.
Anyone ever heard of or used an Ashton guitar amp?
What about a Carlsbro?

Avoid Ashton if possible, purely beginner stuff on the cheap.
If you can stretch out more, get a used 5150 head. Pretty cheap (if you're in the US anyway) and sounds good.

I live in Melbourne and have been scouring over any and all websites and forums that google has to offer looking for deals on 1/2 stacks.
The kicker is I'm solely relying on my tax refund to purchase any gear. This year I'll get back just over a grand and I need to get some upgrades for my computer as well for recording. Its a pretty tight squeeze, I know, but ultimately I'll have to get what I can afford just to be able to start playing live again. The plan is that investing now to be able to start gigging will help me to save up for something that I'd really want later on. At the moment the most promising deal I've come across is a Crate Flexwave 1/2 stack for 500 bucks. I've played on Crate over the years and I've always been happy with what I get out of their stuff.
Something crucial for me is the fx send/return so I can still use my podxt pro. I'd love to be able to afford a 5150 or Laney rig but at the moment its slim pickings and I've been out of the music game for one of the longest periods in my life. Its driving me insane.

Oh, Melbourne, then in that case I share your pain on prices. How much is your tax refund going to give you exactly?

That'll get you into a good sounding Peavey Vyper combo, easily. It will destroy any of the Crate Flexwave stuff by a mile.

Sorry, dude. Just spoke to the guy on the phone and he says he doesn't know much about it because 1) he's a bassist and 2) its his brother's and he moved 2+ years ago.
Apparently the cab isn't a matching Crate cab, its a Carvin so my interest is there. I'll find out more in a week or so.
Do you know of any Peavey Vypyr deals in my price range (500-ish)?

500ish probably wont get you into one the models you need with the wattage and headroom necessary for jamming. But if you're prepared to spend a bit more, it will sound far better than any Line 6, Crate etc stuff in the price range.

Thats a problem I'm becoming all too familiar with. I cant imagine being able to jam with anything less than a 2x12 combo or better. It all comes down to getting the computer up and running and pretty much whatever is left over goes to music.

It's entirely possible to jam with a 1x12, but usually in this case it's because it's a high quality tube amp with high efficiency speakers that cut through. With solid state amps, if you have a 1x12, you generally want a higher wattage for headroom and to cut through.

Have you actually jammed with a rock/metal band using a single 12" combo and been heard?
In my experience I haven't been able to get away with anything less than 100 watts (solid state or tube) pushing dual or quad 12"

For a long time I used a Marshall AVT 100. Piece of shit:lol:
I pretty much had to crank the mids to 10 to be heard lol, and the master volume had to go pretty damn high, the point where the power amp was beginning to distort slightly, not cool on a solid state power amp.
I always wonder why those amps came with the scoop feature, it's the "get lost in the mix and sound like mid scooped garbage like And Justice for All" button basically.

That said, if you can't cut through with a tube amp though, you're doing something wrong because tube amps are always so much louder at the same wattage. It just strikes me as odd, that's all.
50 watts, even through a 1x12 would be plenty with a tube amp. 100 watts and more is just there for headroom for tighter bass and cleaner cleans, not really a volume thing.
