I played through an Engl Powerball for the first time the other day, and was blown the fuck away! I've got my tone with the 5150, but I would cheat on it with a powerball! I'm in love with the powerball! Instead of a resonance knob, it has "Death Punch"!!:headbang: I used a maxon OD808 in front. I've GOT to have one!:p

I posted some settings that i use on my pb. The pb is a fucker to get a good tone out of but its there you just have to ask it nicely to come out
that and a overdrive upfront and an eq in he loop:).

If its dialed in correctly its a killer amp also its worth changing the bias and valves i biased mine a little warmer and put in jj's for the power section and a combination of tung sol and jj for the pre amp section like v1 ts v2 jj v3 ts v4 jj . this gave my pb a more organic less dull sound it roars instead of rumbles now.

That seems to be a common complaint I've read, but couldn't one say the same about a Recto? Thus, wouldn't you be able to remedy the Powerball with the same bizarre-tweaking-and-TS treatment?

IMO the PB has all the negative aspects of the Recto without having the good attributes..it's muddy and fizzy without having the juicy growl in between (like the Recto).
Of course it can be made sound half decent, but I prefer amps that sound good in the first place....

I'd take the Savage over the PB any day of the week.

I agree to disagree on this one. Man, the one I checked out just fucking floored me. I couldn't really AB it with my 5150, but I didn't notice that Rec mud quality, and I tweaked the fizz out early on. Without a TS in front it's horrible of course, oh yeah, without a TS it's fuckin ugly. Most amps are like that, though. Savage huh? If it's radder than the pb, fuck, I gotta hear that!

Go down to MF tommorow and check out that powerball! Bring your TS though. They let you bring your own shit in, well I do since I'm a lefty and they only have fucking Fender strats for me. The 5150 II thats on the floor is fucking broken, input stage,(I think It's the jack) you could probably pick up that for $500 or less, but needs work. The PB should still be there, at $1900:err: so FUCK IT UP!!!

Sorry to hijack, but I've been dying to ask (without starting a new thread), with everyones hands-on experience what is the best Engl to have in your studio In your opinion?
Like a good all rounder.
