More in the "fusion" genre but...

Al DiMeola... especially his 70's era stuff
Return to Forever
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Weather Report
If you can find it.. The band Gamalon's first release.
Pat Metheny

For more hardcore Jazz..

Dave Bruebeck: Time Out
Miles Davis: Bitches Brew
any Thelonius Monk
Milt Hinton
Wynton Marsalis
Joe Pass

Should be enough to get you started.

Just went through some of my fathers old albums...and found some of this GREAT stuff!

- Sonny Rollins ...unbelievable! esp. Roy McCury on the drums!
- Cannonball Adderley ...also ft. Roy McCurry
- Duke Ellington
- Dizzy Gallespie

:)

And if you might care for smooth jazz, try Four Play, Grover Washington Jr. or Rick Braun.

But here are some of my fav's.

Luis Armstrong
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Sarah Vaughn
Count Basie
Dave Brubeck
Hank Jones
Wallace Roney
Louston Harris(sp?)
Ron Carter
Donald Byrd

You can't go wrong with any of these!

Four Play is a cool group!!! Nathan East is a killer bassist!!

One of the coolest "Jazz" recordings I have is one called: "Happy Anniversary Charlie Brown". Its a collection of music from all the cartoons (DUH), but redone by todays artists...

Some of the artists:
Dave Brubeck
David Benoit
Chick Corea
B.B. King
Lee Ritenour
Kenny G

For more of the Contemporary / Smooth Jazz stuff check out the GRP label.. Lot of good stuff there.

Some good artists have been mentioned already.

I'll contribute Sun Ra (and his Arkestra) to the list and describe it as kind of out there non-traditional spacey jazz. Highly recommended.

Speaking of jazz, I am going to see my university's Jazz Ensemble in about an hour. I am very excited. :)

Check 'None Too Soon' or any other by Allan Holdsworth, one of the greatest jazz-fusion guitarrists (I prefer him to Pat Metheny or John Scofield)
As for more classic jazz, Sonny Rollins is a good start, as someone mentioned.
