JBroll: Now with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics!

Even before elementary school I had far too much interest in mathematics and logic, and by the time I entered school I was way too far ahead for my own good. Most teachers learned something from me that they'd never have expected to find, and I spent most of my time neglecting school work because the stuff I could do on my own didn't insult my intelligence.

Did they teach humility at your school as well? Just joshing you....

dude, I can't handle my kid's math aptitude. I mean, I can work at her level and all that (I used to be a physics major, ), but I have no skills to keep her inspired and all that, and my bag of tricks, while getting me killer test scores, well, I can't really express them in an interesting fashion. Got any book recommendations or anything?

She's gonna be 8 this summer.

Hey Jeff,

Conrats & all that. Perhaps you should take up drums. Given your education, I'd presume you can count to four pretty well. We need more drummers like that.:lol:

Seriously, though, congratulations! Best of luck to you!:kickass:

So did you get any pussy?

In elementary school? No. Since then? Yes.

And no, they didn't try to teach humility, as Catholic schools prefer to guilt people into believing they're worthless. Not that it would have stuck anyway...

As for drumming, unfortunately I prefer to bathe regularly and speak in full sentences.

I'd pull her the fuck out of 'normal' schools and take her to a G&T school, first off. Worst thing you can do to her is put her through the dumbing-down bullshit of the average school.

There are also places like Sylvan that would help her out a lot - my little brother is in the same boat, and while he's now going to a total badass school there was a time when he went to the same awful Catholic school my other brother and I had gone to and he just needed to have something interesting going on.

Puzzles and problem solving are really where it's at. Teach her some basic algebra and look up lists of problems - I can send you a few books in basic algebra and geometry. Also, calculus is NOT over the head of a bright 8 or 9 year old - I taught my 8-year old brother calculus concepts without any difficulty at all.

Learning a computer programming language would be good too, but if you have any experience you should try to pick one or two. C is what I'd go for, but Perl could be a lot easier in the beginning. Having a computer got my head going, but if it had Windows or AOL it would have just turned me fucking stupid.

Books like the Handy Science Answer Book and the Handy Physics Answer Book are going to be all kinds of awesome, as will be books on how all different sorts of things work.

Also, if you go to the bookstore and see books by Dover publishing (usually a solid, flat color with black or white text on the spine) in topics that seem interesting, get them. They're really cheap and well-chosen texts, those and Schaum's Outlines are basically my education.

Finally, Wikipedia fucking rules.
