Jcm 900 dual rev high gain 4100

The 4100/4500 series is awful. It was the first tube amp I ever owned. Shrill, sharp, cold, lifeless are the best words to describe them. Don't get it.

A friend of mine has one of these and we've tracked it a couple times. He did one or two very simple modifications (changed out a couple components, nothing crazy) and the amp actually sounds really good. I'll see if I can find out exactly what he did, because we ended up using it over a JMP 2203 MK2 and a JCM800 2203 (granted, it had a little more gain and that helped for what we needed).

That said, I have heard several of these that sounded really bad.

I'd be curious about the mod your friend did too, I have a 900 that I probably should have sold years ago, but for some reason I'm kind of attached to it.

I had the 4500. My experience was that the "distortion" channel was useless above halfways. It just made the sound thinner. In order to get a remotely "metal" sound, I had to hammer the front end with a tube screamer, run the gain about 5, then have the master volume turned up to 5. I had to run that louder than any other amp I've ever had. Eventually, I modded the crap-o-matic solid state section in the distortion channel so there was both a gain and mid boost. That helped it tons, but I wound up selling it anyway because I was tired of horsing around with it. Also, it was probably the most unforgiving amp I've ever had.

When I was working for all that remains mike got stuck with one of these from the generic backline at a show. The look of disappointment was unforgettable.
