JEFF LOOMIS - THE UlLTIMATUM

Why do you assume the lyrics would be cheesy, just wondering since I don't have a track record of stupid lyrics

I was mocking everyone who keeps talking about how newer NM sucks and how the older albums do not. You dont have a track record of stupid lyrics, but for some reason the band can't do anything right without people arguing about how "Politics" or what have you was way better. It was an attempt at sarcasm.

Opinion is opinion I guess.

Saw Loomis. He shredded. I was 'impressed.' The whole time though, I was imagining how much more awesome it was when I saw Nevermroe last year. :erk:

the more I listen to the new record the more I like it. it's much more simplified than zop,. but who cares. it's almost like a totally different style. the songs seem more distinctive as a whole but less impressive technically. the songs with the vocals are all amazing. Jeff's music sounds frighteningly good with extreme vocals.

I've been lurking the shadows for a while about this, but I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys.

Overall, I really like the new record and I feel like it's a huge leap away from everything Jeff did on Zero Order Phase. While ZOP was pretty rad, I feel as thought it was really just a shred/wank-fest. I felt like it was just Jeff sitting in his house with Drum Kit From Hell, and some dude walking down the street just happened to throw a mic in his room and recorded the entire thing.

Not to say that ZOP didn't have its stand-out tracks, and also not to say that Neil isn't a great producer because I still really dig DNB, but I still really feel like there isn't a lot of substance on his first album.

In some ways, the vocal tracks on Plains Of Oblivion are better than some of the stuff on Obsidian Conspiracy. You might want to beat the shit out of me for saying that, but TOC never really grew on me, even after a few years. I still really like Nevermore as a band, but I was never sure how to feel about that album.

I guess the Nevermore boys were having their problems back then, and that's neither here nor there, but it shows on that album, more than any other album.

I've heard a lot of people on the Andy Sneap section of this forum complain that: "Oh, too many diminished soloz, guitars not br00talz enough, not enough low-end, fuck Aaron Smith and his religious crusading production ways, etc, etc, etc," but the production of this album seems more band-oriented on this album than Jeff's last solo album, but I think that's because there are some guest vocals on this one.

I'd post my thoughts on the Andy Sneap forum but those guys just like to start fights over which Tube-Screamer you're using to boost your 5150 Block Letter.

All in all, it's a very solid album and I've been listening to it for a few weeks now.

Love!

The simple fact that Jeff and Warrel still talk is a testament to the bond. Eventually they will work together again I am sure of, as for it being in Nevermore who knows.....

I have let me feelings be known about this break up quite a bit, and trashed Jeff a lot for his decision. After getting to talk to him about it all at NAMM and seeing his side of things I understand why it happened as it did.

Now, I have heard the new CD and all I can say is it sounds like Nevermore without Vocals, so as far as musical direction its still the same as it ever was. It's Cacophony with a modern production.

As for the prediction above ... "Classic Nevermore" is not TGE, its all the POE era stuff, if they decide to return to that I would die happy.

Of and for the record WD has never written a shitty lyric in his life other then .... RISE! RISE! RISE! ....LOL

(You know you will always get flack from the hardcore fans for that...lol)

I can but say that as I get older I change almost monthly. I am hardly the chap I was when I was 20. That guy was much more aggressive. I see each NM album as an evolution.

TGE is the lyrical masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. Metal has rarely come across something so mature.

Anyway. Enough band talk. Once every three years is enough.

Gonna be honest here, as amazing as some of Loomis solo stuff is, it's when he composes WITH vocals that he makes even better music.

That's how I feel with just about most instrumental albums though. The only soley instrumental music I can stand to listen to for long periods of time is classical.

i would put electronic music in that category as well. cant stand too much vocal sampling or rapping or whatever they put on a lot of electronic shit. i just want to chill to the beat, shut the fuck up with your terrible lyrics and vocals!

Perhaps TGE isn't 'Classic Nevermore', but it's also the only album of theirs I've seen ever appear on a Greatest Guitar Albums list. Classic or not, it's purely fucking amazing.

I can see it feeling watered down now that nearly everything Loomis has done since then has been fairly similar...

(I butchered a lot of spelling before, jebus)

NOBODY CAN READ SARCASM. I thought my post was dripping with it.

meh.

anyway, I've got about 7 complete listens to the new cd according to my itunes. plus some in the car. I still stand by Continuum Drift being one of the best on the album, but Sibylline Origin is just frucking HEAVY.
