A Hotel Where Nobody Stays
I picked up this album after hearing Doug and Ted rave about it and let me tell you, the praise is more than justified. What an amazing album...total Beatles/Beach Boys worship but with a modern, slightly hipster twist. Great melodies, clever lyrics, amazing arrangements...it's all here. The production and attention to detail is RIDICULOUS. I was listening to it just now and ACTUALLY STARTED TO CRY BECAUSE THE PRODUCTION WAS SO GOOD. That should say something.

For those of you who know this album, I think I totally lost it when I noticed that the drums in the chorus of "The Ghost at Number One" pan full to the left, like a Beatles record, to make the high vocal line stand out.

I see that Jon Brion was involved with the recording. I love his approach to layering guitars ever since I heard Aimee Mann's "Whatever" (a fantastic pop album...even if the songs are so infused with regret that I can only listen to it once a year without weeping...hmmm, I guess the lesson here is that Jon Brion makes me cry...).

Anyway, Doug, Ted, thanks for the GREAT tip!

Everyone else, CHECK OUT THIS ALBUM!!! If you like clever pop you will not be disappointed.

another great album/artist in that same category is Owsley.....talk about production value. His stuff is much less complex than spilt milk but great melodies and greater sound.

yes..Jellyfish ruled..never heard of Owsley Ted..thanks for the tip...been suggested to check out XTC more..but I don't think they compare with JF for some reason. JF were very unique. I actually prefer BELLYBUTTON as a whole. Jimmy Gnecco from Ours once covered GLUTTONS FOR SYMPATHY actually.

I have 14 DVDrs of live and tv appearances from JF..haven't gotten around to even watching half of them..

I bought Spilt Milk in 1993, and I still listen to it regularly. I love that very special sound, like the Beatles with a strong Queen influence. It's one of those albums (BotW is another one ;) ) where I can't pick a favourite song, they're all masterpieces. It was a terrible shame when JF split up.

A.C.T. is fantastic. To me they sound like a heavy metal Queen. Cool vocals, and lots of little details in the songs. Very clever stuff. Check out "Imaginary Friends"...absolutely killer.

I've just returned from vacations, and I just had enough time to pick up "Last Epic" before I went off. I must say that's GREAT stuff, I love it!

Big thanks for the tip!!

NP: A.C.T. "Ted's Ballad (!!)"
