So is this going to revitalize the trend of tribute albums? Now labels just need to dumped them when someone dies. I really don't have an option on it, sure it will be a good CD.
A lot of conversation at a show last night where a lot of people were saying this looks to much like someone taken advantage of a death. From what we have learned from marketing there is no better time to strike.

I thought I was the only one to think it was weak. Figured if I had voiced that here it would give folks another reason to attack. The song seems like it was just pasted together in a short time.
I wrote one years ago about Dio but the band I was in at the time split (well I walked out) and the song was never touched again. I thought of just posting the lyric sheet a few days ago but it was suggested "why bother".
The song was written in tribute to one of my heroes (before death) and it was inspired by a meeting with him several years ago. But enough said about that.

Dude...what? Limited range in what regard? He has plenty of high moments, delves into his great low range, sings softly and soulfully and belts it out all over the place. He transitions between these things at the drop of a hat with great sense for how it affects the tone of the song in the moment. There's no vocalist out there on the scene like him whatsoever.

I think the song is pretty weak, but also think it is pretty cynical to see it as a straight cashing in on Dio's demise.

I agree with you here. It's great that he wants to pay tribute to him and all, but I really do question the timing of this by the label. By no means am I blaming Jorn here though. I think had this been announced months or even a year from now it would be one thing, but just days after? That's fishy to me.
It's sort of like if you check on ebay now, there's all sorts of memorabilia being sold at inflated prices now, which really sort of makes me sick to my stomach that people do that.

Well I'm sure all these people were/are fans there is no question that Jorn obviously is. But trying not to be my typical cynical self (it is difficult) I can't help to read some of the press releases out there from bands and they basically come off as a press release promoting x band, by they way we liked Dio.
As for the eBay thing well that stuff happens when anyone dies. Just wait to see what Sharon does when she finally takes Ozzy off of life support.

I know from a friend of mine that someone in Jorn mentioned the plans about making a Dio tribute album as far back as late 2008.

I thought this tune was ok, and I'll definitely be picking this up when it comes out. So what do the IMC (Internet Music Comittee) say about a correct passage of time before it's ok to pen & record a tribute to someone who Jorn obviously holds in high regard? If this has been planned for a while, I see no issue with releasing it now.

i will just speak from from my personal record label experience of over 10 years on the timing issue.
here is why this album has been in works from months if not years as suggested by some:
- they have cover art, music video, track listing and production/mixing announced and street date in July. street dates are set up MONTHS in advance and all labels have product deadlines with their distributors. my July releases were scheduled 3 weeks ago with product due in just under 3 weeks. i am sure Frontiers has a little space to breath when setting up a street date but not much.
- with cover art like what they have isn't conceived, designed and approved in 5 days. that work is amazing and took time. IMO.
- they have an entire track listing and Tommy Hansen mixed the album. most producers (or decent ones) have their schedules planned months to YEARS in advance. i don't care how good musicians are they couldn't crank out an album like this in a week. it's not going to happen. i would take Jorn a week to just track his vocals i am sure to get the best takes.
basically, yes, Frontiers has announced this right after Dio's passing and it could be in poor taste, but the fact that this album has OBVIOUSLY been in the works for some time, i think, makes it a proper and genuine release from Jorn (himself) that just happens to unfortunately coincide with his passing.
the REAL question if we are actually going to ask it is WHEN in relation to Dio's going into treatment for his illness was this album conceived? was it conceived much prior to that, or planned/recorded/scheduled as to be released when and if Dio was to be taken from us all? i hate to say it, but if we are debating the validity of it all someone has to raise the subject.
Bottom line (for me): i love Dio and i love Jorn so i am pretty stoked about this either way. his cover of Straight Through The Heart from PP still kicks so much ass.

For sure this thing has been in the can for a while. I myself never was questioning that, but I think the announcement of this is a little too soon. I think everything like you said from the cover art, track listing and video had been done for a while.
You brought up the exact question I really didn't want to ask, but I was thinking it. I just hope it isn't true that they were thinking it during the chemo or whatever, and that the plan was in place before that. That would be pretty terrible. I highly doubt though that Jorn would do that. He doesn't seem to be the type that would. The record label on the other hand I don't know...
...I know you said the date was announced and such, but is there any proof this date was actually set before he died? It's just too coincidental. Almost like the label was just waiting for his death to happen and then announce it. Personally, had the date been set for something like this a couple of months down the line I wouldn't mind. Less than a week? That's rather suspicious.
Like the other though, I'm still looking pretty forward to this release. I think he put some serious thought and time into it. I'm just curious now how many tributes are going to follow his lead now.

Coincidences DO happen, look at DT's live cd from SFAM, with the buring towers on it. I know it's not the same thing, but it is a coicidence...Maybe Portnoy is the reincarnation of Nostradamus, and he was just seeing if he was "right"......
As was mentioned in the Tribunal's post, there's no way they could rush this out, that fast.
