Kaliban The Tempest Of Thoughts
Low Frequency Records - LFR314026 2002
By Paddy Walsh
Finnish melodic deathsters Kaliban attempt to inject some semblance of originality on this The Tempest of Thoughts, a move that must be commended in these days of endless In Flames clones. Following the template set by In Flames, Soilwork et al, Kaliban mix in a diverse range of songs. Little touches such as folk interludes, the inclusion of a sitar in one song, or the use of female vocals in places (which makes them sound a bit too Nightwish for my liking) make this release something for fans of this genre to really get their teeth into. The main growling vocals are as derivative as pretty much every band of this ilk, but at least they are delivered with conviction. Maidenesque twin guitar melodies and hummable tunes aplenty make The Tempest of Thoughts a worthy addition to the melodic death genre. Those who have become disillusioned with the more commercial direction of the scenes heavyweights could do a lot worse than seek this out.
7.5/10
