Kamelot US Tour with Fabio Lione on vocals Aug/Sep 2011

if they need to replace Khan, they're not going to find any singer who satisfy their fanbase.

Case in point:
If Kamelot ever replaces Khan with another singer, I'll probably never buy another Kamelot CD again. I've always been into Kamelot cause of Khan anyway.

Bands who have a long-established singer go through this any time said singer leaves and they decide to find a replacement. The two most notable were Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Even though in Maiden's case, they technically replaced their second singer, Bruce was in the band the longest as singer, and the most notable.

Halford was JP's second singer as well.

I think the bottom line is that any singer is replaceable, if the band chooses the right person. Look at Nightwish. Look at Angra. You can argue personal taste on which singer is better, but I can't think of a band that couldn't survive after a singer replacement.

Sure, sometimes the fanbase has a really hard time accepting the new person and the old singer tends to return (Maiden, Priest, Iced Earth), and I believe Kamelot is part of this select group of bands (the one where fans tend to like the singer more than the band itself).

Roy Khan was Kamelot's second singer as well.

They never said that was why. It could just as well have been because they felt like they didn't have time to rehearse properly on such short notice, which is not the case now. I completely understand Thomas wanting to tour again, with or without Khan. This is his life and his work and they just released a new album that they cannot just leave unpromoted. This time they are better prepared than last fall.

From what I can remember from Kamelot's statement around the time of ProgPower XI, this was exactly the reason that their fall tour was cancelled. They didn't feel that things were coming together with Eriksen in time for anything other than a one off show.

Replacing a singer is one thing but before Khan was in the band Kamelot was a thrird rate BORING power metal band with nothing that stood out. Khan came in and helped forge the sound they have now along with writing the vocal melodies and such. Khan was the perfect compliment to for Youngblood. I dont see anyone else having that effect. Kamelot should disband if Roy is out. Youngblood can start a new band under a Different Moniker and probably get less heat then if he continues Kamelot without Roy.

As much as I like Khan in the studio, his singing live was always a different story. I've seen Kamelot live several times, and each time, Khan had been less than stellar.....maybe it was sickness, maybe it was just an off night...he just couldn't project with any strength at all (it always looked like he was going to bust a vein). I'm sure if this was a regular issue, it would incredibly tough on any singer. I think that was one of the issues with Steve Perry (later in his career) also....not being able to live up to studio work live. It's gotta be really difficult, especially for singers with great reputations.
All the best to Khan....hopefully, it all works out for the best for all parties.

Kamelot is also a far different band now, than they were during their early period with Khan. I have to imagine that some of that progress is because of Thomas. In addition, it goes without saying that Kamelot would have their pick of singers. And the singer goes along way to determining the quality of a Power Metal band.

Never happen in a million years. Thomas is a businessman and his business is Kamelot.

Gotcha.

So Black Sabbath was a boring, third rate band before Ozzy left and Dio joined?
How'd that vocalist replacement go for Nightwish? Most casual fans certainly associated them with Tarja over any of the other members.
Or Fates Warning? Or Helloween?

(This isn't directed just at you by the way)

This isn't the end of the world. None of you even know who will replace Khan if this is a permanent split. They're a big name. They have connections. They won't replace him with some generic metalcore singer. This is Kamelot, not Cryptopsy.

Now, all this said...I've had one opportunity to see Kamelot with Khan over the past 5 or 6 years. And I missed it. I really, really, really hope this isn't permanent. The Black Halo is still one of my top 3 power metal albums ever.

I have to be honest in saying I am not following you at all.

What I think (and hope) you are saying is that many great bands have gone on to have fruitful careers beyond the departure of a stand out vocalist.

Furthermore, this is Kamelot.
Yes, they are a great band, but come on.
You guys are comparing them to some quite legendary bands.

You would be correct.

And wouldn't the point of using all these legendary bands be to show that if they can do it, anybody can?

Actually, no..... Not at all.

Legendary bands have a strong and loyal fan base who would still (although in lesser quantities), purchase new material and go see them live.

I don't think Kamelot is at that point.

I think their fanbase grew a LOT between the Black Halo and Ghost Opera.

This is an extremely critical point in the band's career where every move will impact their ability to remain as a going concern.

I can see why they are going out with an established and respected vocalist, and why they didn't last Spring.
