Karen - Betta talk :)

Wow, I'm looking forward to seeing the puffers!

Hmm, so Karen, this might sound like a RIDICULOUSLY stupid question I just want to make sure I have it totally straight:

I'm currently feeding my betta in a one gallon unfiltered bowl, everyday. If I were to add a live plant to my one gallon set up, and a snail... how much should I be feeding him daily (Hikari betta pellets), and how much water should I be changing out of the tank weekly with a snail?

Thanks so much for all the help everyone!

I feed my bettas 4-3 times a week, and all my tanks have no filter and live plants. I do however change their water along with my fish tanks every week, and for my bettas I change 30-40%.
Snails don't reallly matter for the betta tank- but it sure nice to have a little guy in there to eat poop and food left overs.
I have a snail in each one of my bettas tanks too.
Live plants are GREAT for fish tanks... fish love them, and there are micro-organism that live there that also provide your fish with healthy natural nibble.

try it :)

Another snail question: If I were to get a snail for each of my betta tanks, would it survive on poop alone? My fishies don't leave any leftover food, none. I give them one pellet at a time and watch them eat. And this may sound dumb, but if the snail decides to stick itself near the top of the tank when I change the water, will it survive there without water during the water change?

hmm, with no live plants your snail might not survive... they nibble on the poop but that's not their prime diet source...
I would sink a small pallet there once in a while for him to eat, if you want to add a small snail.

regarding the water change: assuming it doesn't take you that long: I would say as long as he stays wet: he's ok.
If you're worried just push him down to the water while you change the water :)

I approve of Melafix! I'm sure she would have healed without it, but it was just amazing how fast she started healing after I added it!

And after two days of Melafix:
Almost 100%!

Looks great Cara!!

You made me realized I forgot to mention something about real plants:
They will die slowly with salt, or medicine... so if you ever decide to switch: make sure to cut the salt.

yay marie :)

I bought a big cave thing and another silk plant for my tank. Also a heater. And a bottle of janitor strength ammonia. Now it's all set to rock n' roll with microbes. I admired some figure 8 and spotted puffers at a sucky pet store today. I felt bad for them because they had so many crammed into one tank which was also stuffed full of feeder fish.

And all their puppies were $800 each, just wtf. They wouldn't let you even hold or play with one until you agreed to buy it. Lame.

Good grief, I need to stop!! But I couldn't pass these up. I saw these 2.5 gallon tanks at Petsmart yesterday and pondered getting them. Then we had to go back today and they had them on sale! Yus! So I grabbed the only two they had.

The glass lids they came with were retarded though, they had no holes for tubing or ventilation or anything, so I had to make lids myself which was a fun project, fo real! I cut them out of translucent plastic placemats, edged them in duct tape and punched holes in them. I put a 15 watt bulb in the desk lamp, just enough to make a mellow light that's not too hot but not too cold.

Now my fishies have a whole more gallon each, and a lot more horizontal room to stroll :)

If anyone would like Marie's old tank, let me know! I'd only ask for the amount of a box and shipping.

Aye, aquatics is addictive :Smug:
I've been an addict myself for many years Cara... I always have to check what's new in any aquatic department of any pet store I walk into,
and a trip to the local fish-supplier (an hour drive from my house) is in order every month or so..

The tanks look great!!! 2.5 is such a fun size! Albert and Marie are very happy, I am sure :)

Yeah, I had forgotten what it was like. Back when I had Onofrio in Maryland I was constantly buying him something new. Marie was the first fish I had since then, and now two?! I really should stop now though, aside from buying food :p

Have you gotten your new girl yet? :)

You know, I didn't have time to go to find a new girl yet... My parents are coming here next Friday and I have so much shit I need to clean/ organize at my house.
I'll prolly get her sometime this week- I'll post pics :)
