I used to think that too but then I started to get bored with it and now I just can't even listen to very much of it at all. This is very disheartening as I used to love it a lot.

I got bored with The Great Cold Distance pretty fast. Viva Emptiness has stood the test of time for me and remains my favourite "new" era disc from them.

I need some Katatonic help as well:
Is the remaster version of Brave Murder Day with picking up? My older CD is a typical non-mastered version and I've never found anything wrong with it (in fact it is about as perfect as albums get), but maybe the mastered version would make a fun compare/contrast?
Brave Murder Day is my favoUrite album by one of my favoUrite bands so having multiple versions of the same thing with only subtle differences is absolutely a Thing that I'm into, even if I'm not normally into the whole remaster game. Guess I just answered my own question?

ima be real, i stopped buying new katatonia albums after "night is the new day" because they kind of started going through the motions imo. i wasn't feeling it. maybe they felt the same and that is why they had their recent hiatus. looking forward to trying out the new one.
so imo the best of the "new" albums is the great cold distance, easily. it is very coherent and high quality throughout. it is similar in style to viva emptiness but has better production and is a little more streamlined. i think it has aged very gracefully and is an easy recommendation.
"night is the new day" is about half very good, especially the opening "forsaker"/"the longest year" and half pretty cheesy and not great. they went all finn-metal with "day and then the shade" and "idle blood" is a shit opeth ripoff. and they try to be DOOM METAL again on "nephilim" and i don't really buy it.
then after that it gets softer, less metal, more "prog" (i.e. more fuckin around with time signatures for no real good reason) but most importantly -- more predictable and less genuine. so: not impressed overall with either of the last two but i still love the band so i'm going to give them a new chance when city burials comes out.

it sounds the same but worse. like they just put a fuckin compressor on top. which is what they did.
i mean of all the albums that didn't need a remaster, bmd is very near the top. the original is spacious and beautiful with DR14 dynamics (http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/103181) -- destroying that is purely a record company gimmick in order to get to put a sticker on the cover and sell you the same stuff again but worse. don't get owned by $$$. boycott remasters. unless it's nattens madrigal from the ulver boxset.

Dang. Well, I ended up buying a remastered copy directly from Blakkheim. Maybe the liner notes will be cool. Agreed about Nattens Madrigal (I own 3 versions of that album WTF).
That one Opeth song on Night is the New Day is really pretty blatant, the only reason I forgive them is because those dudes are bros or something. Also that album opens and closes so well that a meh middle moment can be overlooked.
Also: I am finally wrapping my head around Dance of December Souls. That one didn't click for me until very recently, and I have tried and tried and tried. Seems to be working now, after about 13 years of spins.

Not katatonia but related. Are those Diabolical Masquerade cds worth picking up? I remember hearing Nightwork like 10 years ago and thinking it was okay.

They are a lot of Fun if not quite Amazing. Nightwork and Death's Design get spun a lot 'round Hallowe'en time.

I agree with Erik about great cold distance being their best post V.E. I would also like to emphasize that the b-sides from that albums are awesome-- as good if not better than half the album tracks:
Displaced, Dissolving Bonds, Unfurl, and Code against Code.
I’m not as down on the albums after that though. I find Dead End Kings a much better overall album than Night is the New Day [their weakest—opener aside], and I think Fall of Hearts is a grower and somewhat underrated, although their most inaccessible album of the last four—nothing really jumps out. It does not come off that proggy to me—see tracks below and the B-sides as well)

it absolutely must be a leftover from around tonight's decision that was overhauled and finished recently, there is no way this is a new composition
it ticks way too many "tonight's decision" boxes for it to be a coincidence
[x] that echoed clean guitar style like in the intro of "for my demons"
[x] straightforward riffin and drummin with none of the tech shit they like to pull these days
[x] classic-ass blakkheim leads
[x] mellotron (well kind of)
[x] the fx'd vocals in the little break
[x] good
[x] but not good enough to not be a b-side (the [non-]transition into the last chorus is awkward af for instance)
so basically this is the only post-2010 katatonia song i've managed to listen to more than three times

new album dropped and i listened to it
i gotta say i wanted to like it but instead it has pretty much finalized my divorce from giving a shit about this band henceforth
it's exactly the same as the last couple of albums. "behind the blood" was kind of an outlier because it had a couple of Metal riffs but the rest is nabbed off tool's cutting room floor as usual.
overall tired as hell, sounds as if they have nothing to say anymore. same vocal melodies, same fear of letting ideas develop and breathe. everything has to be drenched in fucking drum machines and carefully shaped big reverbs and ebows and synth pads and fifty fucking things. it's like they think they can mask the fact that the songwriting is really doing nothing of interest by overproducing the record to the fukkin maxx and never playing a straight drum beat. but they can not. there's nothing going on, it sounds fancy but it's all a facade
the last song "fighters" is ~cringe af~ and honestly the absolute low point of all time for katatonia (well, maybe not, i mean they did write "we must bury you" and put it on an album. never forget.) but i hear it's a cover so... i mean still, why the fuck include it though. here are the lyrics here imagine jonas renkse singing this shit
