Saw this vid linked of another forum and thought a few of you guys might find it interesting.

Looks like he fabricates a mount inside the drum and mics it from there. He's using an EV RE20. Looks cool, doesn't sound amazing in the clip but its an interesting idea anyways. Kinda reminds me of the Kelly Shu micing system but obviously alot more DIY.

Thats the Kelly Shu system.

I think it'd be cool on a kick less resonant than the one they're using to get some tight click and then have another mic just outside the hole or the resonant sin if there's no hole.

I think the idea is to get a mic inside a kick without having a hole in the front head. Personally I'd rather just cut a small hole in the head anyway and be done with it, but then I'm not a massive fan of reso heads on kick drums anyway.

Ummmm there is already a way to do this. Its called the Kelly Shue .... Google it

A friend of mine is an endorsee and he keeps his kick mics permanetly mounted in his kicks so he always has the right position for his drums, and doesnt have to deal with idiot sound guys who have no idea how to mic a kick.

That is a HORRIBLE idea. Have you ever heard a kickdrum with a hole cut in the side of it. OMG sounds like you are banging on a tin can and kills all the low end.

Umm, yeah I have. I think on 6 different sets, including Kai Hahto (Wintersun) when he was endorsed by Kumu. The Kumus are one of the best sounding kick drums I've ever heard. Atleast live. But micing them sucks ass.

If you read the OP you'd see I mentioned this and included a pic of said setup

I dunno HOW they do it cause every kick I have ever seen like that sounds like a tin can. Maybe they have some way of pressing the wood harder near the hole or something.

I'm guessing it's shock mounted in there? That just seems like it would introduce more problems then figuring out how to stuff a mic on a stand in there.....

Truly silly IMO. I NEVER track kicks with the reso head on.

You say this but this is a technique coming from one of the biggest producers of his time.
I'm not saying it sounds good in the video but I like how it's something different and outside the box a little. Obviously he's found a use for this or he wouldn't still be using it to this day. Same guy also likes to track with dynamics as overheads and condensors as close mics, works for him!

Yeah. I mean, I get it. I'm just more traditional I guess.

If you want to hear what these sessions ended up producing, go to Esoundz.com and the "EpiK DrumS – A Ken Scott Collection" - these videos were shot while creating this drum sample set. If you want to hear the Bozzio stuff just go to the sound samples on the left side of the page and scroll down to the ones beginning with TB - there are several demos using different drummers and kits they used which included some great drummers like Terry Bozzio, Rod Morgenstein, Bill Cobham, Bob Siebenberg, and Woody Woodmansey.

I can't say how much the sound changes. I've never tracked with the reso head on, so no reference on the subject. I take the head off, because it's easier to get more mics in the drum. In the pic I posted, it's just a Beta52 real close to the batter head and the U87 about a foot out in front with a popper stopper in front of it. But, I've gone as deep as 4 mics in the drum, plus a trigger. (Always a trigger.)
