KHAN returns to singing... at Weddings.

People aren't always perfect. Sure, Khan could have handled things better in his departure from Kamelot, but I'm not going to hate on the guy over it. He's given me too much enjoyment during his music career to put him on the hate list. If he returns to metal I'll sure give him another shot.

Britt

My thoughts exactly.

I just popped in the "A Cold Winter's Night" DVD again, and not only is Khan amazing on that DVD, he blows away EVERY singer I have ever seen on a DVD, except for Tate in Operation Mindcrime...No other vocalists even come close to Khan on that DVD....... A Jaw Dropping Performance.

Meh....a performance on DVD is not the same as actually seeing the real live thing. I've seen Khan live three times and none were overly impressive. He's a much better studio singer than a concert performer. You want a jaw dropping vocal performance on DVD? Check out Rainbow-Live In Munich 1977.

First time I saw Kamelot live he was on par with that DVD too, so I know it wasn't a one off performance. I hate the whole pile of shit/drama that his career has become, but at one time, he was amazing and that's what I still take away from the band and the music. I hate that people got hurt/burned by all this, especially the band. I hope they rebound well.

Well, I was very cautious of that, so I compared the studio versions with the live versions on that DVD, and I can tell they didn't overlay his studio vocals to that DVD, becuase it was way different...

I would say that Khan's performance on that DVD, was right up there with Tate's on Operation Mindcrime.....Plus, you could just see the passion and emotional pain in his face when he sang, he was really into it that night... It was beyond magical, especially when he sang "Abandoned" and the fake snow started to fall on stage. I still get goosebumps everytime I see that.

Unfortunately I think there are some people that just want to believe that he's always been a horrible singer :(.

This doesn't necessarily have to be the case. They can go back in, after the show was recorded, and have people touch up the various instruments/vocals in the studio. Hell, it's absolutely no secret that Judas Priest did it on Unleashed in the East, and that was 30 years ago. Imagine what they can do now with today's technology. I am not saying that is what they did here, but it's definitely a possibility.

Oh yea, I definately agree with you, but what I also forgot to mention is that I talked to some folks that were actually at that show and they too had mentioned that Khan was absolutely incredible/spot on that night....

But yea you are right, they do have ways of touching up and layering live vocal performances, although based upon the concert reviews I've seen from this show, this show didn't even need it... Just one of those magical performances... The rest of the band was incredibly tight too(I didn't want to leave them out).

Y'all are pretty harsh on the guy. When Circus Maximus played at PPUSA a few years ago, Michael Eriksen sounded off as well (no quite as bad as Khan at Wacken, but still disappointingly off). All our favorite singers have their off days.

To me it just sounded as if Khan's voice was extremely damaged...It almost looked painful for him to try and sing...I'd be interested to see if there was some type of medical throat condition that was causing his downfall..... If that's the case, I don't blame him at all for quitting Kamelot, and then I probably won't buy his "I found religion" excuse, but if that's the case, he should have quit Kamelot earlier.

Regardless, Khan use to be an amazing singer!!!!!...I think why people are angry is because he didn't admit to his severe throat issues, but he continued to go on tour with the band turning horrible performance after horrible perforance due to his voice condition....

But man, his voice sound completely damaged in the 2nd video, but AMAZING in the first video, go figure????

You I think make some valid points. Someone also mentioned exhaustion. While I don't know if he's done some serious damage to his vocal chords, but from the little I've learned, if a person is losing their voice at the end of the night they are damaging their voice, they need to do warm ups before singing, stop straining, and need to do a cool down or else they risk damaging their voice even more and losing it for the next night. Also from what I've noticed with Khan is he seems to many times be pushing, which you can see when the veins pop out in his head and neck. If he's doing this he is damaging his vocal chords. The other things one really needs are good amounts of rest, lots of water, be emotionally well, and be really relaxed to sing higher. He doesn't look like he's had much or most of that in the Wacken video. It looks like he's tired, has an emotional block, and may have already blown out his voice by straining. He sounds good in the first video though.

I've heard Khan sound good and bad live. His DVD performance was so good it made me question whether studio magic was used in the production of the vocals. I've had some knowledgable folks involved with the Prog Power sound setups insure me Khan is legit in his vocal performance. Sometimes good sometimes bad, but probably always legit. He probably prepared and rested well for that DVD performance. Great stuff !!

Britt, with all due respect, IMO, that's because you're a true fan and aren't on the business side of things behind the scenes. Rightly so, many details are kept quiet by inner circles. However, I think that perhaps no matter how much one digs a musician, if you get burned by them (financially or socially), it undoubtedly affects the way you feel about them musically, personally and professionally.

I hear ya, Jen

I kind of think those types of differences should be kept in house. It really doesn't do anyone any good to publically air the dirty laundry. It just alienates fans one way or another.

I fully understand there being bitterness on you and Glenn's part, but you have to also maintain professionalism as well. I'm not sure how good it looks when you have promoters bashing the talent. Some things are better left unsaid ...
just my opinion.

My reputation & success with the fans was built by being open and honest like no other promoter on the planet. How many other promoters have written the "how I booked a roster" post? Or gave you a top 10 behind the scenes moments? Should I not do that as well because it's not "professional"? I should just keep quiet on everything right? Or just be a propaganda machine for those I like? This is my own forum, not a press release sent out to the world.

You really want me to hide the fact I got fucked over just so I don't ruffle a few fanboy tailfeathers? Honestly, I am the defintion of professional because I could blow your fucking mind with dirt on this situation and numerous others over the years....but I don't.

I say we call this one even and move on.

Well shit ... I had a reply ready, but I see you just edited your post. Most of what I had now doesn't fit the post above.

Yeah .. maybe your're right. Let's just move on. Clearly we are not in agreeance on some things. Such is life.

Glenn, hopefully you will be able to blow our minds with all of the additional details when you write that book on the history of PP. That would be awesome!

While on the subject, it seems that Fabio is interested in joining Kamelot permanently:

"Austria's Stormbringer.at webzine recently conducted an interview with RHAPSODY OF FIRE and current KAMELOT touring vocalist Fabio Lione. An excerpt from the chat follow below.

Stormbringer.at: How is the tour with KAMELOT going so far?

Fabio: Great! I have to say that the guys are very nice, I love the songs and the band and everything is going in the best way. I'm also very happy to see that the KAMELOT fans are with me and the band. Every show we have a great time, it's a great experience for me. We feel like old friends, I have to say that we are having a great time and great shows together.

Stormbringer.at: Currently you are a temporary replacement of Khan in KAMELOT. Would you ever consider a permanent place in KAMELOT should the guys of the band ask you?

Fabio: Well, I would love it!!! The KAMELOT songs are great, I really like the style and [former KAMELOT vocalist Roy] Khan is probably one of the few singers that I like. So, of course, I would consider that!!! But first let's do the European tour and the North American one, Then if they will ask me, I'll be more than happy to join the band permanently. Since the first time we met and played together we had a very good feeling. Everything was easy and natural like we knew each other for years and everybody who saw the band in South America or Europe said we did great shows!!! I'm happy for the guys and the fans, so let's see what the future will bring for us. Never say never!

Stormbringer.at: Where are the differences or challenges in singing for your own band in comparison to being a guest singer in another well-established band like KAMELOT?

Fabio: It's not easy, I have to say, but in this case I knew Khan since [his pre-KAMELOT band] CONCEPTION era and I know his voice, style and way to sing; he's great!!! So it was a little bit more easy for me 'cause I knew the songs and especially the singer very well, but you have to be in front of many people, fans that are used to see and hear someone else, it's not really an easy job. The best is [to] do it with passion and make people happy. Anyway, I don't think I do something easy in RHAPSODY OF FIRE or VISION DIVINE, I always liked to do not easy things and this new experience it's very good for me. I just try to do it in the best way I can."

I like the guy and it sounds like he's doing a credible job, but I think they're better off going with someone else. Plus, I would really hate him to leave Rhapsody for Kamelot, especially how good Rhapsody's stuff has been lately.

GDI, I bumped the original Fabio/Kamelot thread to post that. >:/ At any rate, I doubt Kamelot will pick him, but I really like his enthusiasm. I don't think his voice works quite right for every song, but his stage presence is phenomenal, he enjoys himself, and he knows what he's doing.
