Kick and compression for a rock sound (SD 2.0))

Definitely works in the mix! Would even turn up the kick by a db or two.. I see what you mean, but, it´s all about how the kick works in the mix itself. If it sounds crappy when its on its own, who cares. And if there´s a part where the drums are alone (or the kick), just highlight that region and EQ/compress to taste, so that it sounds great on when on its own.
