Kill The Idols

Were the Beatles a simple band, musically speaking? Well, yeah, compared to modern day music. I'll give you that one. But, put them up against other rock bands of that era and you can clearly see why they had such an impact on history. No one else was doing anything quite like it, and doing it as heavy, with such melody and accessibility. The Beatles spawned bands like Black Sabbath that spawned such bands as Metallica and Iron Maiden that spawned etc. etc.

To say they suck? Man, that's like pissing all over your great-grandfather's grave because he had to ride a horse to work while you drive a Trans-Am.
I concur! :headbang:

Egads, man! Did you just say the Beatles plain and simply suck?

Now really, Igor, you don't wanna piss all over your fore-father's grave, do ya?
We just said the exact same thing. They are overrated and average as musicians but important to music history.

See the last thing I said.. "Although I will admitt they have some historical signifigance. Mainly helping to pave the way for society to accept "heavier" bands. But as musicians, they are very average and overrated."

Maybe saying they "plain and simply suck" was taking it a little too far. I'd like to change my statement to "average and overrated as MUSICIANS"

I would also like to add that Ozzy was the only member of Sabbath that was heavily influenced by The Beatles. Iommi was the main man behind Sabbath and he was much more influenced by blues/blues rock musicians. (Although I am very greatful for The Beatles influence on Ozzy as I am a big fan of his.)

Anyways. They are important to music history but overrated and average musicians. I hope this clears things up

I'm usually waaaay to wordy, methinks, so a simple weigh in here:

Aerosmith - overrated (But night in the ruts is good)
Beatles - not overrated
Zeppelin - SOOOOOO not overrated. Jimmy is the man, etc.
Guns 'n Roses - Waaaay overrated, but I do think Appetite is amazing, and always will be. Everything else they did was crap, in my opinion anyway.

Oh, and Van Halen is overrated, but then again, only by FM radio heads, so who cares. No offense to fans here. The first album I got by them was Fair Warning, which I LOVED. Then I got the older stuff, and newer (as it came out), and wondered (in both directions) what the hell happened. Their records are completely inconsistent, I think. That didn't stop me from seeing them a couple of times, and Diver Down was pretty much my speed.....but the rest all had spots I just plain didn't like much.

Anyway, to get technical about it, I've never seen them as a metal band.

...and, the thing about the Beatles was THE SONGS. The songs man. They wrote so many timeless sounding songs. To me, they sound like songs that were pulled of the air, or the human psyche (somewhere near where the archetypes reside). Seriously, if they didn't write those songs, eventually, somebody would have - weird as that statement sounds. Only, it would have been a bunch of different bands at different times (getting mystical here). That's what is so fucked up about the Beatles. They wrote Hey Jude, Helter Skelter, We Can Work It Out, I Dig A Pony, and a TON of others. One simple little group of guys.....sheesh.

Very interesting point of view. In my view, with the Beatles, it was all about melody. And, IMO, melody is all that matters, at the end of the day.

Heck, even much of the members solo stuff is phenomenal (just check out Harrison's "All Things Come to Pass"....amazing record).
And as much of a pussy as McCartney is, he's written some of the most memorable melodies in the history of mankind. So, with that said, perhaps it's NOT accurate to say that they were "overrated as musicians". Heck, dont you think that wankers wuch as Yngwie, etc as nauseum, wish every day that they had the Beatles' ear for music? Imagine if Yngwie could have coupled his "technical skill" with a strong sense of melody & songwriting? He could have been a star. Instead, he's a small-time cult hero to fans of musical masturbation. Along with a hundred other guitar "heroes".

AHA! See, this is exactly it! Methinks. As per my thread about 'shredding' elsewhere here. I don't have any problem whatsoever with proficiency, pure talent in the strictly know-your-instrument-sense. It's only that so few can mix that with a talent for songs, and as you say, melody. To me, that's why I can't really get too into Dream Theater. The proficiency far outweighs the hooks. That mysterious "song" quality if you will. No offense to 'em. See, I think Opeth, for instance, has both. They are great musicians and great writers, and so move to the next level.

Really, that's why I have never had an ear for Jazz, personally. To me it's (broadly speaking) just a bunch of guys that are sooooo proficient and know so well where the beat is, that they all completely ignore it. It's more like abstract math than music to me. And the thing is, you don't have to go that route to do the abstract thing. I would mention here Sigur Ros and ISIS, two bands that are completely uncoventional, who kinda use that "math" of which I speak, but don't ever jack off about it. Tool is like that too I'd say. And I like all the affermentioned, a lot.

As to the musicianship of the Beatles, I'd only say that they knew their instruments well enough to express what it was they had to say, and that speaks highly (in the very least) of a sharp enough proficiency to get across what you have in your head. That's pretty good, in the least. I am not proficient enough to play everything I hear in my head, but maybe someday.
