some colleges operate on quarter systems still, but not many. (Northeastern University just last year changed to semesters, i think)
nut butter, i don't think there's a universal template everyone can cozy into so much as i think that the large majority of the time (like i said, maybe 90%!) what people think is right for them is actually not right for them. we humans sometimes have very poor self-assessment, in some cases better or worse than in others.
so in the absence of reliable self-assessment, a handy rule of thumb is not to take time off from undergrad unless something pretty serious comes up.
