Krisiun are another one of those bands that I'd never liked previously, but in form true to what you'd expect, the new album has grabbed my balls and given them a 90 degree adjustment. I wanted to not like this album, but sadly it has proved itself to be one of the better death metal releases you're likely to hear this year, or even the last two if you count the fact that it urinates all over the Nile album from the top of the Empire State building. "Bloodcraft" kicks the proceedings off with a dose of Fear Factory-esque syncopated rhythmic exercises before breaking down into true death metal carnage of the more familiar kind.
Fast forward to "Father's Perversion" and you have a great malevolent riff that stands tall when compared to anything on Morbid Angel's celebrated "Covenant" album. The riffing is so evil and tight that it makes me drool dammit, here Moyes proves himself a master of the genre and a damned tight axeman to boot. The flow of the album is neatly punctuated by two tasteful instrumental numbers, "Doomed" and "Summon". These tracks really work in favour of the album, providing neat breaks from the frantic riffing and speedy drumming featured elsewhere. Krisiun have pretty much set the standard for fast death metal this year with the display of sheer bloody minded precision and the pace only lets up when it's at a point where it needs to.
This album is a benchmark in consistency, in fact none of the songs on offer here disappoint, or let down the high standard established by the opener. The band just keep burning down the pretty narrow limits that the death metal genre imposes on music. This effort is interesting, flawlessly executed and worthy of manifold praise. I'd recommend it heartily to anyone with even a passing interest in death metal or extreme music in general. As I've mentioned, this is flawless in terms of musicianship and that must be applauded, the band have obviously worked hard over the years to hone themselves down to such a keen cutting edge. This album defiantly does it for me, I'm sure it'll do it for a lot of other people too. An excellent album.
