Hi Andy!

Great Job on the new KSE! :headbang:

I'm mixing my Bands Album at the moment and i need some advice! :err:
Is it possible for you to put the BD and SD Samples you used on the KSE Album online? ...Like you did with your C4 Setting? This would be a huge help!

Thxs man!

I'm serious! It would be "hammergeil" to have these Samples! I found a similar SD on the Web! I think it was the Fat *something* from Alesis but which BD was it Andy? I'm still stuck with that Bassdrum sound... err and which Tom Sample did they use? ;)

ha ha ha, NO! I have no idea where the kick sample is from originally, but I got it from another producer, and Colin R has it from me. Adam doesnt have it.
The snare on the first Killswitch (that I did) is Fat City off the D4, full points to Fabz there, my usual fav is the picallo mixed with a Bob Clearmountain mixed with the original.

Heidelburg eh, I did a band called Thorn Eleven down there, great place.

hey andy, I've also the Bob Clearmountain CDs... which one do you use? snare from cd1 or cd2? and sorry for my ignorance (i'm not so good at english speaking...) what's "picallo"?!?!?!?!?!? cheers
Simon

The Andy Sneap samples? Great idea but as I mentioned before, it’s about the whole mix. On the Dead Heart you hear ambiance. That helps to fuse it together but if you have real fast stuff then you have problem. Guys, even if we had the same gear and the samples as Andy, it wouldn’t sound the same. Just like all guitar players sound different, engineers make different mixes. And Andy is of course a specialist, remember that!
I always end up with to much lows, like most of you I think. (To create that extremely heavy mix!!) In a later stage of the mix I always remove more and more lows to get rid of the muddy sound and to give each instrument his own place in the mix. Compress everything separately.
If can’t hear an instrument? Don’t make it louder, make room for it!
Anyway this is my style. Hope it helps. Good Luck.

Yeah, thats why Im not too secretive about all this, same with everything really, you can go out, buy hetfields gtr rig and still not downpick to master of puppets.

I'll tell you the kick on The Gathering was a combination of monster and fusion off the D4, and it was actually James Murphy sat at his keyboard, trying to hit them both at the same time (we then sampled the result), so they're not in phase, just a good combination.

The Question I always wanted to ask but was afraid to…..

Andy. I now, that even if I had the samples, replace it, It won’t sound even close to what you do. I mean the really heavy pumpin’ drums on you’re productions are awesome!! I know that you are magician in the way you fuse sounds together and still have a clear mix.
In my opinion a great deal of the story is compression. I also compress my samples and the entire mix but it doesn’t even come close. Are the outboard compressors you use so much better than the plugins?
Please, my mix could use a little magic to. Thankxx in advance

It's not only eq and sample thing but also very constant volume of al the instruments what is so great in you’re productions. (Samples can be constant of course)

Andy, if I understand, you comp the snare, toms and kick with the Channelstrip plug, you don’t make a submix? Then comp the master buss with the Allan Smart C2 ?
So you use that one only on the master buss?

I only compress the vocals and bass when recording, the rest in the mix. Also I try to make the sound right in the analogue domain before recording, so I have to do less tweaking in ProTools.

Wow.. yet again Andy has helped me to remember part of the fragmented mosaic that is my life from 1999 to 2001.... the tumor really messed up my memory from that time. Andy, after reading your post i can now remember that day pretty well... it was indeed a lot harder than one would think to hit the keys of the kurzweil just right to trigger the two samples simultaneously, and as youve said they aren't really in phase...but man those are some mean kicks on that CD. Thanks again my friend, for helping bring to light another cool memory from my part in The Gathering.

the choice of the samples was Andy's of course... don't want to appear to be trying to take any undue credit! \m/

And it was a sheer fluke that Jim managed to hit 2 keys at a time, in fact i think he actually fell onto the keyboard.
First time I met James he started quoting Sabbat lyrics to me, should have guess he wasn't quite right then! ;o)

Bell, Book, and Candle... Candle, Book, Bell.... Forward and Backwards, Condemn me to.... um..... um.... uhhh....

i remember that night Andy!! you had hair!!

"Picallo” is a snare sample from the Alesis D4 drum module. I also like to blend from D4 and the Bob Clearmountain CD. Right now it’s the “Fat City” (I think) and a “Black Beauty”

Which one from the BOB Cd's do you prefer Andy??

Thanks!
