Lack of excitement in metal...

nah, music was still new and utilized different there was no crunchy riffs back . Just like with modern day movies, most ideas have been used, you can practically predict the endings on lots of new movies because its been done before . Music is more limited than you think.

WELL YEAH IF YOU HAVE THAT ATTITUDE IT WILL BE

Anyone else noticed we're on a dry spell of anything really interesting in metal lately? Most of the stuff we talk about is old bands. No new bands really kickin ass. Fuck, even Cryptopsy sucks now. For awhile lots of cool stuff happened. New Grave, new Megadeth, new Obituary. Black metal, save for the older stuff, has run itself to death. Tech death is all the same (except for a few. Origin being one.) I've not run across anything new and exciting to listen to in some time...

This topic has been done to death, and in general, I agree with your post. A few bands are doing things differently, but things have basically leveled out.

Not glorifying and trying to recapture the past may be a good start. That era was great, but something completely different, in terms of instrumental play, may need to be done. The spirit should be the same, but playing something that doesn't sound like the past would be good.

If you're basing that off of big-budget mainstream flicks that make it into theaters nationwide, film buffs and students will tell you the same thing that music fans and experts say about what's on the radio: of course it's predictable and formulaic. That's what most people want, and it's not always guaranteed to be much less true the deeper you dig into the underground, where things can still be predictable in a less accessible manner.

There's something out there for you, but I can't entirely blame you if you'd prefer not to sift through a lifetime of garbage to find it.

I think glorifying the past is ok to a point. But totally agree with not trying to recapture it. Otherwise we're all becoming that guy you know with the mullet who talks about how great it was when he played football and listened to lynard skynard in high school.

This reminds me of the "originality" quip I see from time to time, the constant bickering about how "nothing is original" that seemingly hundreds of metalheads chant. Yet whenever something 'original' comes out....... no, the keys are gay...get rid of the horns.. I can't get into that growling...this isn't music.. wah wah waaah...and everyone goes back to listening to Evergrey or something.

Metal isn't just this background noise to kind of stimulate the attention-challenged mind, it's about the songs and compositions and it's made special by the HUGE variety of things you can do under the umbrella of the idiom. If it's moving to you, it shouldn't and wouldn't be because it's original or if it's derivative. Depending on your taste I can somewhat sympathize with not finding a lot of new stuff out that is alluring, but I question why there's the troublesome twitching for something "new", as if the newness is a factor to if the songs are any good..? As I said..it just makes me think too much of the people who just want to kind of sit back and be entertained by soundscapes.
