My history with music includes previous label/production jobs at Firebox Records (Finland), Kolony Records (Italy) and Alexandra Distribution (Hungary). I have also released over 50 music fanzines under half a dozen names in Finnish and English, with the latest Kolony Magazine (summer 2010) was actually released as German written print magazine.

Huguenots, The - Discography (digisleeve) 12,50
The Huguenots are a band that you probably won't have heard of, and they split up in the 90's. So why bother with this release after so long? Well Discography, as the name suggests, is the entire recorded history of a band who's members went on to bigger and better thing. In that sense this is almost like listening to a prototype, but listening to it long after the finished article had been presented to you.
The guitars are Kurt Ballou (now of Converge), the bass is Aaron Stuart (now lead guitarist with the soon to be defunct Piebald), vocals are by Matt Oates (now with Angels Of Meth) and drums come courtesy of Dan Colby (formerly of The Explosion).
The music is a bit of a grower really, post hardcore with lots of emphasis on Ballou's guitar work. The vocals tend to be either spoken or shouted, occasionally to the point of incoherence, but never go so far as to be screaming. That is something I'm very grateful for as I think it would ruin these tracks, much like it ruins a lot of tracks these days. There are occasional moments of oddness, quite possibly what makes this album worthwhile, where you can hear the embryo of a bigger musical idea not being fully realised. That's not to say it sounds bad, just that a few years after these recordings there were bands doing the same things in a more defined way.

Even if this is a disc, the album is divided into side 1 and side 2, what is not only a nice joke, but it's really reasonable. The first side equates to what one would expect from this band, namely top-notch heavy rock 'n' roll with a strong southern rock influence. The so-called side 2 is much harder to digest, because there ATKOF show their filthy, doom-drenched side and the title-song is overwhelming the listener with heavy Black Sabbathian grooves. After that the band completely renounces the vocals and start to focus their attention on merciless doom-driven riffing and feedback noise. This second side is making the album more interesting, so that you can't describe it as the next typical heavy southern rock 'n' roll album.

With "A Disease For The Ages", Mourning Beloveth still play the same kind of Doom Death Metal with really dark but melodic music and with this amazing alternation of Death vocals and angelic (yes their clean vocals are simply amazing for me) voices. This is slow one more time but never boring and I still feel this old school Doom spirit that we can find on Black Sabbath's albums. Of course this is Metal and not Rock, but Mourning Beloveth is one of these few Doom Metal bands which found how to mix true Rock spirit with Metal and that's just amazing.

Kuten entinen In The Woods… -veljensä Christer Cederberg, on Transethkin kulkeutunut varsin kauas alkupisteestä ja tekee nyt Transit-nimen alla sitä, mitä soololevyltä nyt voi odottaakin: kokeilua, tyylillisiä hyppyjä ja varmasti aina takaraivossa jumputtaneita rock-riffejä, jotka ovat vain odottaneet oikeaa kanavaa ruumiillistuakseen. Levy onkin mielenkiintoinen keitos eksperimenttihenkeä ja Bleed on Men kaltaisia instant-hittejä – voisikin sanoa, että Decent Man… on vaikeaselkoista easy listening -kamaa, hieman kuin Nick Cave Bad Seedseineen. Tosin vaikka länkkärihenkinen Estrangeiro/New Man vanhasta Nickista muistuttaakin, on Transit paljon suoraviivaisempi tapaus. Levy voikin tasaantua moderniksi postpunkiksi tai eteeriseksi Pink Floyd -rokkailuksi.

Johan Ericson is a multitalented musician and producer with a number of projects of his own. The most distinguished of these is DRACONIAN; a gothic/doom act which Johan established in 1994. From the profound elevation of this distinct mind calls also the spirit of DOOM:VS; a project born from the idea of constructing something utterly dark and personal in the unique field of doom metal.

Near the closure of 2004 the self produced demo album, Empire of the Fallen, was released; a four track obscure and prominent contribution to the doom metal underground. The demo was very well received and led to a deal with the Finish label Firedoom Music (extreme doom metal specialist label of Firebox Records).

Soon after that the debut album Aeternum Vale was recorded and finally released in 2006 and made very good reviews throughout the doom metal community.

In January 2008 the work began on yet another album. Dead Words Speak was written and recorded by Johan himself at the DRACONIAN rehearsal room. With a more heavy approach regarding the sound than previous efforts the music is both darker and more eerie than ever before. Filled with emotion and despair Dead Words Speak is a personal settlement with the past. Almost crushing sometimes the music don’t lack the evocative melodies that signifies DOOM:VS.

Bio: Swedish Forest of Shadows was founded as a solo-project in the autumn of 1997 by Niclas Frohagen. After having recorded the demo "The Silent Cry", multi-instrumentalist Micce Andersson joined the band. Together they reinterpreted and polished up the old material and released it as promotion material both on cd and online at mp3.com, all with the intention of attracting a record deal.
Putting songs on mp3.com turned out to be a winning concept and for a couple of weeks the band dominated the mp3.com’s metal charts. The English label Rage of Achilles (home for bands like Cult of Luna, Mistress, Manitou, Spiritus Mortis) had noted this and offered the band a record deal. In 2001 the MCD "Where Dreams Turned to Dust" was released and soon afterwards the work on a full-length album began.
During its production, Niclas and Micce started drifting apart, not as friends but in terms of musical direction. This resulted in that Niclas finished the album, later on titled “Departure", on his own. As if the separation wasn't bad enough Rage of Achilles went out of business just as the album was finished. In 2004 the record deal was handed over to Finnish label Firedoom Music who not only released the album but also offered a deal for yet another album.
This time things went more smooth and in 2008, after three years of slow progression, the album "Six Waves of Woe" was finished.

Pantheist started as a musical concept in early 2000 in Belgium. After little experimenting with dark synth music at first, their attention turned to slow, dark metal. In November/December 2001 Pantheist entered the Templa Libitina studio of fellow doomster Stijn van Cauter from Until Death Overtakes Me and recorded with the assistance of a session bass player a first demo called `1000 years`.

The demo drew the attention of Finnish Firebox Records, who offered Pantheist a two-album deal. The band entered the studio in January 2003 for the recording of a first album called 'O Solitude'. Several live performances in Europe followed, with the likes of Morgion, Evoken, Mourning Beloveth, Skepticism, While Heaven Wept, Esoteric and Until Death Overtakes Me.

In May 2004 Kostas decided to move the band to the United Kingdom due to the geographical distance with the other band members. As in the early days, the band became again a twoman studio project, but Kostas and Nicolas saw soon two talented musicians join their ranks, namely Andy and Mark, at the time both in Esoteric. With this line-up, the band recorded ‘Amartia’ at The Lodge studios, Northampton. The album was released in April 2005 by Firedoom Music (Doom specialist label of Firebox) and took the band’s sound to whole new dimensions of oppressive, emotional music with a mystical atmosphere. After the recordings, the band’s line-up was bolstered with the addition of guitarist Ilia (Indesinence).

In June 2005, Sterghios joined Pantheist on drums. in July 2005, Pantheist entered The Lodge again to create two new lengthy compositions. At the same time, a cover of Katatonia’s ‘For funerals to come’ was recorded at Priory Studios, Birmingham and engineered by Greg Chandler. The tracks were released in addition to the band’s ‘1000 years’ re-mastered demo as well as a live video recorded in Belgium in October 2003. The result was the EP ‘The Pains of Sleep’, a very diverse yet coherent collection of tracks covering all stages of the band’s history.

Pantheist have renewed their contract with Firebox Records and their third album ‘Journey Through Lands Unknown’ is to be released in the November 2008 (Europe), December 2008 (USA). Also bands debut album O Solitude will be reissued in 2009 with new artwork.
