lets talk drums

i'm investing in an Audix DP7a microphone package to replace a stolen DP5a

is this a good investment?

i need some advice for getting a good sound when recording toms with hydralics or ec2s i recently got waves mercury, i have a friend who uses it and likes what he gets out of it

the way he compresses his toms though there is no character, its really just a loud 'fwap'

i haven't had time to use it yet but does anyone know of any specific plugin in the waves bundle or any type of plugin or technique to get some punchy sounding drums?

The better your audio sounds, the less you have to do to it and the better it sounds. The more processing you do (particularly EQ and compression) the smaller they sound, because by raising the attack or whatever, you're also reducing the volume of everything else.
Start at the source, tune the drums well and evenly (across the toms so they're in 'tune' if you hit 2 at a time), new heads help a LOT, a good room and a good player. Good mic and mic technique. If there's anything I've learnt its easier to fix a 'problem' earlier in the chain rather than later. If you think its got too much whatever, tune it differently or mic it differently. Don't just leave it and fix it with EQ or plugins later.

totally know what you mean... i guess its just the difference in hardware and microphones that sets the difference between my product and a professional with tens-of-thousands' product

thank you for your advice... i just started my recording service at the beginning of 07 so its only once in a blue moon i get the privlage of recording someones band

my older product is on here
