emperor is far from flawless, although great. anyone who slags Abigor typically has only heard "satanized"...which wouldnt be a good basis of comparison whatsoever seeing as the album was trash.
 
NineFeetUnderground, I hope you understand a thing called "opinion"....although it wouldn't seem that way judging by many of your previous posts. I've heard many Abigor albums, and even though they have a lot of good stuff, the most of it is still quite generic and even boring to me. Nowhere near Emperor, for example. But then again, that is only MY opinion, not yours. I just wish you would start giving other people the right to have their own opinions.

i never said anything i was saying was "FACT". i have strong opinions, and express them freely, for its my right to do so. its not because im just an arbitrary asshole, but its because i feel i know what im talking about. when mikael or another avid music listener and guru says "metalcore is shit"...i dont hear fans like you crying about him not stating its just his opinion. I think it should go without saying, that when someone says a band is better than another, it is opinion and not FACT usually. What IS fact however, is that abigor is NOT a generic band in the slightest...youd be extremely hard pressed to find another black metal band which sounds just like them. I do think though that people need to stop putting emperor on such a high pedastal. I am a big emperor fan, but am the first to admit some of their compositions were often contrived and pretentious, and indeed overrated. And i feel a band like Abigor was equally as interesting and talented, but is criminally overlooked. Thats all im getting at here. Truly listen to nachthymnen or Opus IV, and tell me that abigor isnt on par with any other tier 1 black metal band.

Well, often it seems that you're acting like your opinions are facts, but I don't want to start a useless fight here. I know I shouldn't let your way of saying things bother me but sometimes it just gets on my nerves a bit.

What IS fact however, is that abigor is NOT a generic band in the slightest...youd be extremely hard pressed to find another black metal band which sounds just like them. I do think though that people need to stop putting emperor on such a high pedastal. Yeah, I probably used the word "generic" wrong there... What I meant was that many of their songs resemble each other. And yes, they're way underrated compared to Emperor, although I would still choose Emperor out of them. I'll also agree with you that Emperor's songwriting wasn't always so great. Well, maybe except for IX Equilibrium, which I rate very highly.

Alright, well ill see if i can change the way i word things from now on to be more down the middle of the road from now on. Its habit though, based on conditioning. I used to post like that, but nobody ever paid attention or took notice it seemed. Id mention bands consantly in a neutral and easy context, and then 3 months later people would say "hey have you heard this band...they rock!". In which id have to respond "uhhh, yea...i only praised them 20 times before." It just got irritating...plus half the court says "NFU knows his shit, check out what he recommends. And the other half constantly says "hes some elitest prick, he thinks his bands are the best, blah blah" and so i cant seem to win for losing around here anymore.

As for your opinions on the bands...I agree with you entirely. But to say emperor's songs dont resemble eachother often wouldnt be accurate or fair either. when you break it down, its still black metal....blast beats, fast guitars, and backing keyboard melodies. its hard to give tons of variance to that ALL the time, which is understandable. and yes IX equilibrium is very underrated as far as im concerned too...i think its more listenable and less overbearing (at least in the synth department), but everyone seems to leave it out of conversation.

songs like curse you all men, elegy of icarus, and sworn are DEFINITIVE watermarks in emperor's repertoire, and i constantly hear about anthems being the best, etc etc.

Also, what do you think of Kvist? More in the league of Enslaved than Emperor, but really an underrated band in my opinion.
 
Limbonic Art rules. They have always been in my eyes a perfect black metal band. They are the perfect mix of absolute chaos and beauty, never having created a mediocre record. They sound so good and stay true to the "raw" bm sound at the same time, and for all the chaos each story possesses the band is just a duo. It was a sad day when I read the band would write and record no more. All hail the legacy of Limbonic Art!

Well, Ill give some specifics, but i think it should be fairly easy for anyone really into music to understand that a band of emperor's caliber would have to be pretentious anyway to some degree. As for contrived...mainly with some of the compositions and more specifically...the synths therein. Sometimes it seems like Ihsahn thought he was beethoven with the keys and orchestration of them, but often i found it came off semi cheesey and fell short of the mark sometimes. MAINLY on prometheus...it just got out of hand. But i understand/appreciate/like most of what emperor has done greatly, theyre still one of my favorite metal bands. Im just not naive enough to think theyre godlike and flawless....no band is really....let alone a metal band.
 
This thread has sparked my intrest in this band LA. Can someone please reccommend me the best album to start with.

Okay, yeah I see that in Prometheus. I usually only regard their black metal material in discussions about them. You can see that Ihsahn has such great potential, but just hasn't got it exactly right since ITNE. The synths are just about flawless on that one. I can't wait for his solo album because I'm sure some moments will be amazing. The Tongue of Fire was brilliant.
