Why do the live dvds sound so good? That's really not what they sound like is it my friend said the band goes back and remixes everything and fixes mistakes is that true?

Best thing about At The Gates-purgatory unleashed dvd is it's one of the only natural live dvds to come out in a long time, before it starts a little sign even comes up saying something like "this is 100% live recording-no overdubs" :)

yeah the at the gates album is amazing, and the sound is pretty damn well, one of the best live Dvds I've seen.

I think it sucks to do overdubs and stuff, and I personally don't like reamping either, cause it just totally changes what really happened in that place at that moment in time, and that's what a live concert is supposed to be about, a memory of a specific moment in time. Mixing, well, of course you have to mix it, you do want it to sound good, as in balanced etc. but with the original tones used IMO

I 100% agree I'm sick of seeing these "live", dvds and they sound just as good as the album I want to hear that moment in time

Dream Theater's "Score" DVD is possibly the most perfect production I've heard from a live DVD. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that's how it sounded live too, and definitely no over dubs.

Unless you're in an optimal listening position in the audience (and ideally a well designed venue) then it's always gonna sound better listening to what's going out live to the desk, straight to disk than it will sound to your ears live, I reckon.

Can't be sure about score, but I've seen them live a few times and they always play and sound flawlessly so yeah, they're definitely capable of pulling it off.

I know Petucci had to dub a little part of Under a Glass Moon on that dvd, one of the camera men accidentally stepped on a pedal that mutes his whole rig. You can see him for a split second trying to figure out what was going on. Haha

I also really enjoy the mess ups on the latest Opeth dvd. Strings breaking & wireless system/amp not working. Classic.

What do you guys think of re-amping a live performance, considering you use the same amps and settings?

I figure the guitars are going to be eq'd anyways for the mix, so why not re-amp and help get some of the bleed out of the live mic.

Interesting, those things happen. Yeah I love the more "live" on the two Opeth DVDs than on Lamentations, that one sounds like an album. The others, sound more like a concert, specially the roundhouse one, so raw, even if at the expense of some heaviness, I prefer it like that.

And the Arcturus DVD (possibly my favorite live DVD ever) also has a huge fuckup, with knutt's guitar dying during his guitar solo (which ends up being entirely skipped, at least that's the impression I get when seeing it)

I'm sure Live After Death, which for me is one of the best live concerts ever released, is edited, but I love to see Bruce painstakingly trying (and sometimes failing) to reach every note on the second part of the first verse of Aces High that gives it that live magic that made me appreciate the show in the first place. It shows that the band is not a godlike machine that plays perfectly. I say, edit the albums but leave some of the "magic" on live DVD's and don't edit them to death.

Avenged Sevenfold's live in LBC is live with no overdubs and sounds fantastic. CLA mixed it so I guess that's why.

I've no qualms with re-amping a live performance. I'm not too fond of excessive sample replacement though. A little bit of blending to add a little extra punch is cool but when you go and see some bands live (e.g. In Flames) the whole kit is just 100% triggers and I actually think it takes away from the energy of a band performing live.

Seriously?

I've seen that one a few times and I've always figured it was overdubbed to shit because it sounds so good.

I'm pretty sure A7X is overdubed noone for a harmonics dive bombs that precise

Kind of really wish I never opened this thread.......

This info was unknown to me and I think I was better off wondering about this topic than knowing. :(

The Avenged Sevenfold one is probably not overdubbed but the drums are probably sample replaced and the guitars are probably reamped too. I just checked it out on youtube and the first lead Almost Easy is painfully out of tune, they'd have fixed it if they had done overdubs.

New Foreigner DVD/Blu Ray has triggered drums obviously. And the ride cymbals sometimes jumps out over some gates or something. A more live sound would have been so much better, especially when he's playing the drum solo and silent hits and rolls aren't triggered :(
I think when you have picture to the sound its so forgiving that you don't need all that studio perfection. And if you replace the drums then do it right ;)
