Live in Finland!

Since most of you guys here may not know the other bands except Seventh Wonder and Nightingale I thought to write a short preview of the line up in Helvation Festival. For Finnish people there are better ones in local forums, but those may not help foreigners :) Since we are extremely proud of the whole line up (not just the main acts) I think this is called for.

Friday is opened by Speedtap, a young band that has already gathered a good following in Finland and foreign ug-scene with their speed metal. If they will continue writing as good songs as so far they might have a bright future. They are followed by a long term Finnish speeders Solitaire, a band that is already famous in ug-scene both in Finland and central Europe. With 5 full lenght albums thay have established a strong cult following. Since they don´t play too many shows/year we would have liked to give them a longer playing time but that was not possible to keep the evening compact. After that is Malicious Death, the biggest ug-thrash metal band in Finland. They just released their 3th full length "...From Above". Uncompromising band that will most likely never achieve mainstream success but will always be loved by those who are into that kind of music.

Then comes the first Swedish band Enforcer that plays traditional heavy metal with NWOTBHM influences. Those guys are really starting to grow to the bigger league. Since their debut "Into the Night" they already toured a lot in clubs and festivals in Europe and also did a long US tour. But where as the debut was more into speedish stuff like Exciter and such the second album "Diamonds" really hit to the bullseye with more Iron Maiden based rocking, being a very solid and catchy album. After that they have toured a lot also playing some high profile festival gigs such as Sonisphere in UK. Evening will be closed by their country men Portrait that offers also 80s-style melodies, but I would say that the most notable thing in their music are Mercyful Fate-influences. All in all I would describe them as a darkened 80s style heavy metal. They have just signed a deal with Metal Blade so I am hoping that those guys will also get the big wheel running. One of my personal favourites in the genre and I am waiting to hear them first time with their new vocalist.

Saturday is opened by a Finnish Band called Battle Beast. They play quite traditional mainstream heavy metal - I am not into most female singers in heavy metal but their singer Nitte is an awesome piece! What a voice! I will strongly suggest to come and check them. Band was founded in 2008 and the progress has already been rapid. In 2010 they first supported Blaze Bayley in Finland mini-tour and later for example won the whole Wacken Metal Battle and other big band contest in Finland. You will most likely hear about this band later on. Then comes Merging Flare that I expect to be loved by SW and NG fans. The band will release it's first full length album later this year but they have already been around quite a while playing progressive heavy metal. Truely great musicians, One of the guitar players have for example played some shows in Gamma Ray. Well just check the both beforehand...I would imagine that the both will have something to offer.

Well then SW and Nightingale... I don´t think that much is needed to say about those. I trust you have done your homeworks!

Ok, I admit that this was poorly writen and not too informative introduction. But the best that I could do at the moment. But hopefully some will find this worth reading :) And you can always check the music from myspace and do your own conclusions.

any chance we can get a lineup of the songs sw is playing at hellvatational (it wasn't called that was it? i'm completly falling asleep here at 5am.)
i'm thinking of maybe possibly if i can afford it and get a week off of my course flying over from aus for the two days.

but before that, how will it be for an aussie who only speaks english? i know most places are ok with it but it'd be better to know beforehand if when i get off the plane i'm gunna have to start mimeing things due to a language barrier.

I personally don´t wish to get preinformation about the songs. But I understand that for an aussie thing may effec :) I can however say that SW got as long set as they wanted and that was ~65min. Nightingale is playing maybe +90 min or so.

As the language situation goes no problem for anyone who speaks English. Especially in the capital region. But basically every Finn (Under 70 years or so :) is expected to speak English. Of course some do it better and some worse depending on education and things like that but I have never heard that anybody who speaks native English would have faced serious problems in Finland. We have a relatively small population so everybody learns Swedish and English in school besides Finnish. Many people also studies German, French, Russia etc... So, no problem for you. However if you have a strong accent then I may hint that it always helps if you speak with lower tempo :) Total respect if you choose to come! Calls for a beer I would say if we meet :D

heh, i apparently have an accent that even other aussies can't recognise... i got asked where i was from during poker last night... while in the town that i was born in... and raised in... me and my mate laughed our asses off afterward. but i digress.
so yeah, 65mins sounds great, i was expecting something more like screamfest that happened here at new years where every band got about all of 2-3 songs from what i hear (was gunna go but last minute stuff).
so yeah, i'd always heard that the finish education system taught 2 other languages but wasn't sure if it was true or not. so hopefully i'll be able to make it!

Enforcer has just cancelled their gig in Helvation Festival on Friday. We will announce the replacement later, sorry about this. Not our call.

And the opener in that Jyväskylä-gig is "Status Minor". Again, very talented musicians (especially Jukka, the keyboardist, who is also a keyboardist in THUNDERSTONE and Rolf Pilve, the drummer, in my opinion). Cool progressive metal. Not quite like SW, but still melodic and complex arrangements. Check out: http://www.statusminor.com and http://www.myspace.com/statusminor.

I LOVE Status Minor! I got their last album, Dialog, a while ago and was absolutely blown away by it. It's definitely a major recommendation to anyone who loves progressive music.

I'm afraid I won't be able to make it over for any of the dates though :( Short on cash after Progpower Europe, and I still have a few gigs lined up here in the Netherlands that I want to go to.

Tell the guys from Status Minor to play a few gigs in the Netherlands ;)

So, we got the replacement for Enforcer...and even upgraded a bit! The newcomers is Grand Magus who returns to Finland after almost 2 years! They will also take the role as a new headliner on Friday. This drops Portrait on the second headliner but they will keep their set time.

And a bonus: no chance in ticket prices because of this!

We will let you know new schedule for Friday later on.

Well, we have snow on the ground here in Jyväskylä at the moment (0 degrees celsius)... :p

Come and say hi to the merchandise-guy in that Jyväskylä gig... :D

Thanks for the gig in Turku yesterday. You totally rocked. Too bad I only had money to buy 2 T-shirts...

Penetrator, can you post yesterday's setlist (or does anybody else have/know the setlist from Turku)?

Amazing show in Jyväskylä! Big crowd headbanging and doing sing-alongs all the time, wow!
Band was in really good shape. I was too exited to wrote any set list in middle of photographing and sellin merchandise, but at least we hear Banish the Wicked, Taint The Sky, Not an Angel, Mercy Falls, Unbreakable, Hide & Seek (& destroy :p) Tears for a Father and Black Parade...and Alley Cat.

As far as I Know, the setlist was pretty much same, I believe exactly same songs, than Turku.
