London gig with Akercocke

Another nice point - came away having chatted to loads of really friendly people. Great atmosphere.
Yeah, loads of really nice people. I wonder how many of those people are ones we've encountered on the forum?

I almost didn't go to the gig coz I was in a fucking bad mood and I had lectures at 9am this morning. But thankfully I came to my senses!
I was front row, against the barrier. It was amazing! At the Mean Fiddler in September I was somewhere in the middle, slowly dying of suffocation and not being able to see anything except the top of Mikael's head and some of Mendez's hair flying about.
Personally, I thought Burst sucked but Akerkocke were pretty damn good. Except the keyboardist. What was he doing there anyway? Except vibrating, that is.
Opeth kicked ass! Mikael is hillarious. And damn, Mendez is pretty short surprisingly. Anw all that is secondary. Opeth rule :notworthy

Excellent gig. And yeah, I'm also pretty sure that TGC was played before UTWM. However, it doesn't really matter, they both sounded fantastic. I was really pleased to hear something from Orchid! Didn't get there in time to hear all of Bursts set, we only caught the last song and even then we were all heading straight to the bar.

Met Mikael and Peter outside after the gig for a bit, which was cool. Spoke to them for quite a while before they had to go back. Overall a very good night indeed.

Under the weeping moon was definitely before The Grand Conjuration.

The guy next to me ( upstairs :( )was recording it, I was going to stop him after the gig and give him my email address but he buggered off during Demon of the Fall so I missed my chance - I wasn't missing Demon for that!

It seems i'm the only person who thought Opeth didn't play very well - the first few songs (apart from White Cluster and Closure) seemed much too slow and i hate the middle section of Closure because it just drags on. It didn't help that i had people constantly whacking into me and the security guards barging past me to sort out some dickhead, plus one of my friends fainted during Bleak so i missed out on that. Under the weeping moon came across better than i expected it to although the boring atmospheric section was even worse. Deliverance and DOTF were excellent though. I can't help but feel disapointed considering the amazing gig at the Mean Fiddler is still fresh in my mind.

Akercocke were the band of the night for me. Keyboard blokey (was it Casino Brown from the dvd?) looked a prick, but the rest were great! David Gray is amazing - he's a fucking machine! They would've been better if they played another song off Choronzon and Horns Of Baphomet. Jason has the nicest guitar ever though, and the only thing i can say bad about them was they were a little bit quiet. Me and my mates bumped into Peter Theobalds a couple of times before the gig though - seemed really nice!

Burst were alright i thought, better than Extol were, but they weren't anything special really.

I must say though - The drums for Opeth were excellent .. Everything was perfect from what i remember.

I can't understand. Why are people saying Mendonca's vocals were comedy? Have none of you ever fucking listened to black or death metal!? He's about as good as vocals get in both ranges. The keyboard player is a prick, I don't like to consider him a member of the band, and other than him Akercocke are definitely more technically talented than Opeth in every way (Mike has a better voice, but come on, did you ever see Mendonca fail to produce any vocal line at the correct volume?)
I had a drink with the guys outside in the pub next door, I'm calling them Akercockney now haha. They are a really nice bunch.

^ dude the boring atmospheric part of UTWM is the best bit.
Per didn't get involved as much as I'd hoped, and most will agree that Mike's clean vocal bit near the end is the best :loco:

First time I got to a computer since the gig, hence the delay. I thought it was a darn good gig. Got to meet Ken - Silent Song - which was cool. I agree with BRI, Mendonca's vocals were pretty good, really varied. The keyboard player, or Techno-Man as we named him was off the tits, he made me laugh all through their set.

The bass was too loud for the start of GOP, that got sorted out though. Cymbals wern't miked enough though which was a shame as Axenrot drummed well, he seems to be getting more confident. Incidently he walked right by us as were going in, but I only realised when he passed. Some bloke right by us had his Minidisk out and was bootlegging the whole thing.

If anyone heard/saw two people shout out Bert Reylnolds before Deliverance that was me and Ken.

As much as I enjoyed the gig I too left feeling something was lacking in comparison to the September Mean Fiddler gig. Can't put my finger on why, as last night's gig was flawless:Spin:

AckerSucksCocke's vocalist couldn't hit any note at all, especially when "singing" instead of growling and screaming, his growls were textbook cookie monster - no better or any different than any other generic death metal growlers out there. Nothing special whatsoever about his vocals. The music itself was bland and boring. The guitar work was uninspired and samey. The drummer was excellent technically but boring artistically. Ackercocke go into the "trying way too hard, ten for a penny growler band" bin. I liked them like I like a sledgehammer to the face. Each to their own though.
