While i am primarily a guitarist, i live in a house where amps aren't really practical and spend more time jamming through revalver/pod xt and when i gig, just pod through whatever is there.

Now, and with a record deal looming, i feel i shouyld buy an amp in the coming months.

First option is a 5150 as i LOVE these but close 2nd and since i love the fuck out of them, a JCM 800.

any JCM800 users here??

Any opinions? What to look out for, what to avoid like rape?

ENGL Fireball!

Oh and, hey guys. :) Although Gav and I go way back to Ragnarok, remember that Harper?

2203 user here....(also a 6505 of course)

the 2203 are awesome for old-schoolish thrash-stuff and all the doom-things.
for modern sounds I prefer the 5150.

both amps are very different, in case you want an amp in the middle get an Engl Blackmore (btw the best Engl IMO)...supertight palmmutes, more Gain and clarity and a bit more modern than the 800.

you should also consider a Laney perhaps.

cheers

I've quite liked the Marshall JCM900 Hi Gain Dual Reverb (+ 1960B 4x12") both times I've played with it live. I haven't heard it used on records, but live it's a kickass amp :) However, steer away of the JCM2000 Super Lead 100, as it is horribly glassy and thin - at least the one I played with.

gav, you have a similar situation to me. i live in a house where amps just isn't practical and was stuck with pod tones until i bought my randall mts series amp. if you haven't heard about them, they're all class-A tube amps that have interchangable preamps i.e when you want to change preamp, you simply unscrew it, pull it out, slot next one in. the company design about 13 different preamps all based on the exact circuitry of a lot of top-gain amps - you could have the jcm based one as well as a bognor based one and a rectifier one. whilst the amp (small 20W 1x 12 inch celestion) i have is probably not the job for gigging, they do have a load of top quality amps in the range. my amp also has an excellent direct xlr out for recording, when i load impulses on it i get a nice tone through my recto module i reckon. well enough of me plugging them, get to the randall amplifiers site and listen to some clips. if it's versitility whilst keeping a quality tube sound you want, then they might fit the bill.
