Looping Software?

Is there some software out there that allows real time control of loops? Maybe a plug-in or a standalone program? Basically giving the same functionality of a loop pedal like the Digitech Jamman or the Boss RC stuff. I want to try writing some stuff with a looper because it has so much possibilities but I'll love to try it out in software before splashing out on one of the pedals, and it might even be better on a program.
I'm fairly sure I saw a video before where a guy was using a Mac and he was recording some parts and then playing them all on a piano. He plucked the strings in the body to get some weird sounds and he layered it all up in one performance.

I'd want to be able to do it with a click or a button press so that I could do a live take of something and play over straight away, like you can with the foot pedals. I know how to loop a part in my DAW but it would be unsuitable.
Here's a quick example of the kind of thing I'm talking about Here's KT Tunstall doing a song using the technique too. I'm looking for a software equivalent of what the pedal is doing.

Ableton Live is designed for just this sort of thing (though typically from a DJ angle)

EDIT: GOOD GOD, $500 for Live - there's Live Intro for $100 though, doesn't sound like your needs are particularly outlandish so that'd probably be adequate; how exactly would you control this though? (without a food controller I mean, unless you got a MIDI one)

RiffWorks T4 - it's free and it's great for getting ideas down.

I liked it so much that I bought the full version. It's perfect for quick and dirty song writing.

ACID PRO maybe? Basically the program that started the whole thing, and it's actually quite a full-featured sequencer too, along with good MIDI and virtual instrument support.

The Lite version comes bundled with M-Audio and Digidesign gear. It's limited in features but you can do the looping stuff

riffworks will do the job perfect for you - its piss easy to use too and has a few fx built in like compression, reverbs and an instant drummer

Cheers for all the suggestions. I'm going to check out as many as I can. I think one of my friends has a basic version of Abelton and I'll see if that will do the job, and I'm going to get the Riffworks program too.
I'm thinking I can rig up something for doing changes if I need to, but a button click should work for trying this stuff out.

Ableton Live is the software created for mixing loops in a live situation and an easy to use one !
