Underpainting (which I actually like better)

The eyes are the coolest thing about the whole painting, me thinks.

So there it is...to me, the whole thing is a little cliche..but I really was out of ideas. I think I'm going to lighten the hair around the face...and the face needs more work. I think it's too dark (why must I make everything dark!!).
:zombie:

The reason why I painted this was because I really understand the lyrics of the song...historically and otherwise.
I just wish I could translate the images in my head better :(

Thanks, everybody!
Gah....I want that fucking underpainting back! :(

You know, I tried explaining to my teacher that I work in oil washes....she thought it looked very unfinished, so I slopped more paint on (HUGE MISTAKE).

Oh ho ho ho! I was torn apart during the critique...for about, oh, 15 minutes :tickled:
People nitpicked so much that I only had ONE minute to explain the meaning behind the damn thing....and then they shut up quick.

I had two critiques back to back (I've been sitting for about 6 hours), and the painting one really sucked. One girl actually complained about the fact that I use too many different types of brush strokes.
Uhm...when did that become a problem exactly? I was trained to use as many as possible to keep the surface interesting. :err:

Yah...it was bad enough that people were talking about how I was shredded outside of class.

Hey Karen....I think the painting took about 14 hours (4 of which were building the canvas itself)

wow thats awesome baby, It kinda lots like the Dream King from the sandman.
Btw you can tell me who the people are that poked at your painting and I'll eat them. A lot of those people in your class can't freaking paint so they can shut the fuck up. (I know, I've seen some of their paintings.)

Yeah screw em. Bottom line is that you're happy with it.

And I think it's beautiful! I especially like the hair through the fingers and the shadowing where her hair come out of her head. Good depth. I like!

The mythology behind it is a huuuuuge part of it :)

I had to explain the story behind the Lotophagi...and the Nevermore album..in one minute
:D

Lesa,
I find it funny how there is a say: "no such thing as no such thing" in art
yet when it comes to critiques the term, at times, becomes transparent.
Critique is one of the most important steps when creating an art piece. Every artist craves for critique- any kind of it.
What was the assignment? What did the teacher say about the piece as a whole?
Never shiver when it comes to that… I know…I know…..there is nothing worst than working on an art piece *your own* art piece for that matter, and being smashed by bad critique and negative feedback.. At the same time: always take notes of what people say, some you’ll find helpful, and interesting, some you’ll find completely wrong. The main thing is: always be 100% confident about your art! When you are confident: then you’ll take the feedback with open arms… I think deep down you are confident, which is good. :)
Hey, I’ll always love to see any art of yours: you have my email, always feel free to share K? :)

gorgeous painting! So talented:)

Hey...I just got my grade on this thing...aaaannnnd:
I got a C!
Whee! Possibly the lowest grade I have ever recieved on a painting...or any other art thingie for that matter.

*stokes the bonfire*

I'm going to fix it....so I can maybe raise my grade a bit...but I don't even want to look at the thing.

Karen, I re-read what you wrote on here...thanks for the encouragement. :)
Just so you know, this painting class is an utter joke. The facility is a mess, and there is no room to work (people have to paint in the hallways...and there is no room there, either). :(
People have 0 respect for your paintings and supplies (I just looked today, and my white canvases were both spotted with someone else's paint), and people have been stealing canvases, palletes, and paintings

As a side note, 99% of the artists in the studio are into the whole nonrepresentational thing...so I stand out like a sore thumb during crits.. :Spin: They hate me, I think.

I'm thinking about going to the next critique dressed in a fuzzy bear suit...just to ensure nobody will be in a pissy mood :p

Go for it. The others don't seem to take the class seriously, so why should you?

...because she has a genuine talent. Those with an innate ability for anything have been put down for years by hacks and idiots.
