I just threw Slayer's "Season in the Abyss" (from 1990) into the CD player after not going semi-"old school" in a while, and what did I notice:
- having to reach for the voiume knob to turn it up
- dynamics
- resonance in a kick drum
- no ear fatigue after only five songs
- no obligatory breakdowns
- compulsory air-drumming to Lombardo
This album is not the greatest metal production ever, but it still sounds cool. Quite a cleansing of the ears from a lot of the brickwalled stuff churned out these days. There's some amazing engineers and bands out there, so hopefully this whole loudness thing will chill so we can actually hear 'em properly without being squished to death.
