I recently bought Åsmund Frægdegjevar and boy am I happy. At its core it is a folk CD but the most folky thing about it is the story the lyrics weave (albeit in Norwegian). The vocals are pure beauty, most especially the female ones, which actually dominate the majority of the vocals. Sometimes the music is doomy, often it is just catchy in a beautiful way. The guitars don't venture much from the low strings but that is perfectly fine; the violin and organs are there to pick up the higher notes. The drumming is average with the bass playing being slightly above average. The pull of this band is its function as a cohesive unit. Also, if you read the English introductions to each song, you'll soon realize that each song fits perfectly with what is happening in the story; the music truly does move the story along with the atmosphere each song conveys. Their logo kicks arse:
The girls are pretty:
I'm looking forward to finding Troll for a reasonable price. I don't know much about it but supposedly the bass playing is superb.
