Lyrical phrases that for some reason get to you

Love those lyrics and that song.

Like snowfall, you cry a silent storm
Your tears paint rivers on this oaken wall. . .
Amber nectar, misery ichor
. . .cascading in streams of hallowed form
For each stain, a forsaken shadow

And the lyrics in all of "You were but a ghost in my arms". I also love the vocal passage at the end of Bloodbirds, "Our fortress is burning against the grain of the shattered sky" etc.

Josh Haughm certainly has a way with words.

I was about to mention Agalloch :headbang:

I also especially like Akercocke...
"The night is cold and clear
I cast my gaze to see
Your voice is warm and near
But it means nothing to me
Sea breeze turns to gale
It's harder now to see
Your words are like a veil
But they mean nothing at all"
:worship:

Strange, all the Akercocke lyrics I've been able to make out have been pretty lewd.

I'll have to focus more on the lyrics next time I listen to them.

Porcupine Tree - Buying New Soul :
I woke up and I had a big idea
To buy a new soul at the start of every year
I paid up and it cost me pretty dear
Here's a hymn to those that disappear.

Porcupine Tree - Where We Would Be :
Strange how you never become
The person you see when you're young

VAST - Pretty When You Cry :

If you knew how much I loved you
You would run away
But when I treat you bad
It always makes you want to stay

I could do this all day. I'm a sucker for good lyrics. I might post more later :)

agalloch pretentiousness :erk:

^I just now realized how shitty a lyricist SW is.

Uh, whatever...
Atleast he creates lyrics with a feeling behind, he writes stuff like it is without wrapping them in tons of metaphores...totally one of my favourite lyricists. Classic example is "Feel So Low", people either despise or love those lyrics, there's a rare honesty in his words. I love Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun lyrics.

agalloch pretentiousness :erk:

Sure, they might be a little pretentious, but they sound good; the phrasing and actual selection of words is excellent (words like cascade, for example, just have that sound to them).

And when put into the context of the songs, they usually fit pretty well. Especially the end of Bloodbirds.

An example of a good Steven Wilson lyric would be 'A Smart Kid'. As Koi said, a lot of stuff on Stupid Dream is actually cool.

Life turns a new and strange page
They will try to take everything away from me
You'll never know the future
Save me from the rain
Tell me what matters in life, if anything
I'm struggling with sickness
They will try to take everything away from me
Are you trying to hide from the end
Save me from the rain
Save me from the end

From Wintersun - Beautiful Death

nuo valkoiset kentät tätä maata hallitsevat
jään välkehtiessä hiljaa itkevät
kaiken kuolevaisen ajat muistavat

halki pohjoisen kirkas taivas siintää
metsän huuruun saattaa kylmällä sateellaan
tähdet taakseen kätkee, meren tuleen sytyttää
ukkosellaan vuoriakin vavisuttaa
päivät seisauttaen öisin raivoten

kauan ovat pilvet kulkeneet
rauhatta vetten päällä velloneet
jos taivaankannen liekki nyt roudan sulattaa
meitä vain riepottaa virta mukanaan

nuo valkoiset kentät yötä häikäisevät
hiljaiset jättiläiset jäästä ja kivestä

maan kylmän kauniin saa tuuli hajottaa
ja ikuinen virta lumena sataa
lakeudet ainiaan vailla asujaa
tahtoonsa jääkylmä tuuli maan kauniin taivuttaa

kaukana viima pilviä ajaa
kallioihin suruisat säkeensä kirjoittaa
taivas eksyttää väsyneen vaeltajan
jonka valkoinen tyhjyys lopulta maahan kaataa
niin kiroavat jättiläiset jäästä ja kivestä
ei tästä kukaan käy

vaikka puut tuhkaksi palaisivat
vaikka ranta karkaisi veden taa
ei tätä maata voi ihminen omistaa

Moonsorrow - Jotunheim

The way he sings this song is just so epic and sad at the same time. Awesome lyrics...

I'm coming to an end,
I've realized what I could have been.
I can't sleep so I take a breath
and hide behind my bravest mask,
I admit
I've lost control

or pretty much anything else by Anathema

he's sitting in his room
the razorblade's shining in his hand
he's sitting with a oneway ticket to nomansland
He's thinking of his life
hated by many, loved by few
he's thinking of the way he chose to go

but you do know that
everyone loves you
everyone loves you
yes everyone loves you

when you're dead.

This is my favourite song lyricwise, roughly translated from Swedish, not as powerfull in gay english :kickass:
Dia Psalma - Alla älskar dig.
