I agree that the limit arbitrary. There isn't anything to debate there. That said, I can't say that I 've ever run out of active tracks-- anything that's muted the whole time (ex. guitar DI for possible reamping) just doesn't get voiced so it doesn't count against the track count. Maybe I'm jsut using a loop-hole there but personally I'm willing to trade track limits for near universal compatiblity with other studios. Obviously this isn't the right choice for everyone.
The track limit is trickle down from HD and TDM software where track count does matter b/c your core cards are handling all of your real time processing (except RTAS) including the mix bus. This doesn't change the fact that LE is host based and the system should determine the limit (not the software) but it might provide some insight for those who don't know.
