M/S Processing in Mastering

I was reading some shit and I found this. I know that this is not something new, I also know that iZotope Ozone 4 have this feature. What I want to know is what you think about this technique? Do you achieve good results? What are the real advantages of this? Do you achieve significant results with this? Just tell me your thoughts about it.

I think it's a good thing to get into. It gives you more freedom to make changes to specific things, like a vocal panned only in the center without effecting something like guitars that are panned hard left and right.

Like any other process, it's easy to get carried away with it. Just keep in mind, it's not always needed and when it is, use it carefully.

^ Indeed. It's a good tool for dealing with mixes that are more severely unbalanced, but as always be sparing and avoid processing when not needed.

I'm almost 90% sure Ted Jensen uses M/S for his comp/eq when mastering.

Tried that on a project on the purpose of fixing a bad mix, but the client panned the most weirdly EVER. The only thing at the sides was the toms and everything else was at the center. Vocals, kick, bass, guitar, horns, cymbals...you name it. SO you know i didnt fix anything at all. But it might be useful, specially for controlling the low end to get some extra headroom...

Oh yeah, I'm 100% sure Ted, amongst many ME's use M/S.

But doesn't mean they use it 100% of the time...


Jangoux I had that recently as well...bizarre huh
In that case, M/S only pushed the toms further into oblivion.
