Mackie Tracktion

if you're using cubase sx2 already then tracktion 2 is a step back imho. yes, it might be a little less cpu-hungry, so you can use a few plugins more but given the power of todays systems: how much fx can one possibly need? plus: it becomes a non issue when you make use of the freeze function.
where tracktion really shines is the ease of operation and logical layout. i personally love it for this and in the beginner to intermediate market tracktion will possibly be the undisputed no1 in the near future.
nonetheless i use SX3 for my productions as the editing possibilitys (midi and audio alike) are so much better and more detailed, i have the wonderful mpex2 timestreching in cubase and so much more...
so, unless you are totally unhappy with the workflow and layout of cubase (not every application suits every user) i wouldn't spend the time and money to buy and learn a new piece of software that is less powerful then what you already have.

but don't take my word for it, you can easyly try for yourself there is a demo available at the mackie site.

all the best!

I downloaded Tracktion when it was avaivable with a free license from Mackie's site. I have used it since and it's really easy and fast to use. I don't know how much it costs now, but if it's in the same price range like Cubasis I definately recommend Tracktion. There's some features I'm missing, but I like the ease of use, so I can concentrate purely on making music instead of the software.

I definitively recommend Tracktion2! I love to work with it since 2006. I never had any problems with it.

Does someone know something about Tracktion3? I´m not sure, if I should update, because all is so perfect with tracktion2 now.

If you need an easy to use piece of software and want to focus more on recording and less on bells n whistles...Tracktion is the way to go. Once you start getting into more advanced editing (like aligning drums to a grid) then you'll probably want something else.

It's a step back from Cubase feature wise, but a great program for no nonsense recording.

i have been using traction 3 since it was released. Its a good basic daw but i think i am going to upgrade to sonar soon. Just yesterday i was recording with traction and some how the tempo line got screwed up and was never able to get it exactly lined up again. The undo button didn't seem to work. I am sure i just did something wrong but this is not the first time this has happened to me. So i had to go back and re record all the parts i had just spent 5 hours recording. bummer. Other than that, for 99 bucks you can't go wrong.
