'Desiderata' is nothing less than a masterpiece. just like 'Deadlands', but with more variety and a bit heavier. whoever said its 'nu-metally' shoud be shot down immediately. only because there are downtuned guitars and some choppy riffs, doesn't make it 'nu-metally'. it's the same as someone would call Meshuggah 'nu-metally'...
anyway. this one is clearly my favourite release this year (besides Katatonia's 'TGCD', and Enslaved's 'Ruun' is not far behind). its really worth buying. i assume you heard the opener 'My Name Is Silence' and it's right, the other songs are better...

I'm still waiting for it because I ordered it from Amazon along with a bunch of other CDs and something seems to be holding my order back. But the video for My Name is Silence is fantastic and once again reminded me that Madder Mortem are infact *the* best female fronted metal band. No opera vocals or cheesy goth princess imagery. Just a stunning female vocalist who can be sing beautifully and sound like she will kick your face in if you look at her wrong (without resorting to lame sounding-just-like-a-man growling). And terrific songwriting. They sound like no other band I can think of.
So yes... dear Amazon, please hurry the hell up.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what style of music should one expect, delving into this band? I've heard the name dropped often, but never heard any of the music.

its quite difficult to describe their style. their sound highly original, which is a rare thing nowadays. imagine a bit of the old The 3rd & The Mortal ('Tears Laid In Earth' era) add a bit Nevermore, a bit Meshuggah, some older Gathering + downtuned guitars, awesome bass, lots of dysharmonics and strange riffs + occasional calm, softer moments and jazzy parts + best female vocals out there with a voice ranging from soothing/warm to angry/shiziphrenic, without sounding cheesy or 'gothic-princess'-like.

It's a great album. By all means worth buying. Not sure about the nu-metal part, though, that would put Mortem at, what, like....3 trends behind the times (it went nu-, power-, and then -core right?)? Not too likely!
I think it's especially to the band's credit that they released such a worthy successor to Deadlands even though some members quit or were sacked, if I recall correctly.

I don't like the tone of MM's singer.
I'm not saying it's out of tune, but sometimes it seem to go flat.
Don't care much for the arrangements... Seems like a common metal album
to me.

actually, i'm really disappointed by 'Materia' (considering how much i liked 'Classica', 'Novembrine Waltz' was not that bad either). average songs with really weak clean vocals. i'd rather prefer each single song from 'Desiderata' than the whole 'Materia' album...Benighted Joe said:Buy MATERIA by NOVEMBRE!
