i don't get it....

why would a band whose entire premise revolves around Satan (even if for a schtick) choose for their name an ancient Akkadian (mesopotamia) god, the followers of whom didn't even acknowledge the Christian God/Satan or even believe in an afterlife?

I dunno, maybe the translation ("Son of the pure mound"- well, in Sumerian atleast) was kind of a joke against god (call yourself pure, when infact you're not:confused: ). Anyway, all the dark forces in all those old religions (and pretty much any religion except Christianity) were just as powerful as the good forces, so maybe that was an appeal (ie them refering to a dark power that was as strong as good, whereas in Christianity Satan is basically a weakling compared to God).

If you buy into Zecharia Sitchin's work, I think Marduk is the 12th Planet that bashed Earth or some other planet in half (sorry for lack of detail, been a while since I read the book). Maybe they liked the concept of a celestial body that split a planet in half.

Also, don't underestimate the coolness of a name like MARDUK

Yes Marduk is a cool name indeed. :u-huh:
And i think the planet ur mentioning is Nibiru? I cant seem to remember either. Spliting the planet in half would be good. One side there would be the Humans and Animals, the other side the Opethians.
:loco:

It was bugging me, so I went and looked it up (I have a copy of the book, it was just a matter of finding it :err: ).

Turns out we're both right :D . Nibiru was the name used by the Sumerians, Marduk was the Akkadian name, although that was also used by the Sumerians to refer to one of their gods, who were all linked to the celestial bodies anyway.
We both get to go to the top of the class ;) (and we've also managed to confuse anyone who doesn't know what the hell we're talking about  )

MARDUK is definately a very cool band name! :muahaha: Yourdeadgroom I am absorbed in all things planetary and am keen indeed to learn the name of this book you speak.

well maybe because its just an image thing and its not really researched, but then you already sujested that. , but then again who cares? as long as you like what you hear and that little fact you mentioned doesn't cheapen your views on them, then good for you.

Ho ho ho ! Marduk is about the best entertainment in metal !

As for the lack of female opethians, hmmm... I wonder :p we, opeth-men should try to conquer more female hearts with, say, "Demon of the Fall" ! :p
