I'm not a huge fan of these guys (though I love March of the Fire Ants), but I'm really impressed by the drumming. The more I hear, the more I like. He's really got his own style.

As a guitarist, I haven't heard much about him--is he heralded in the drumming world?

Drummers seem to like him, from what I've heard.

I only have Leviathan, and while I haven't listened to it a lot, I find the drumming wanky, to be honest. Impressive, but wanky in that "he's playing a fill every other measure" sort of way.

I've been meaning to give it a re-evaluation, though.

Sometimes, he reminds me of Billy Cobham. Not as talented of course but I like to hear this approach in a metal band. And I like Mastodon.

A lot of people say he overplays but i think his drumming really adds something to the music. Everything sounds a lot more energetic to me because the beat drops out every other measure for a fill.

i think hes really good..i cant think of another player that plays with the same style as he has..and its even better when i tell my friend (who plays drums) that i want to cover a mastodon song..ahahaha

He is a great drummer - on the Today Is The Day stuff he played on he's a lot more controlled, but it still stands out as better than most. The thing with Mastodon is, as wanky as his playing might be, without it the music wouldn't work nearly as well. Most bands playing music that prog-ey and layered would get bogged down pretty quickly, but the drumming keeps it going at a decent pace.

Plus, the drummer in my band is a bit like that, and he's a Hell of a lot more fun to jam with than some guy that just copies my rhythm with his bass pedals.

Good player... lives off of those snare fills like I havent seen in ages.

SUPER nice guy, too.

Wow, if you think Levithian was wanky you need to check out Remission and Lifesblood. Those albums are WAY more wanky ...he's really toned it down recently.

I do like this band a lot, I got to see them at a basement show back in 2000. Their demo was prety awesome too.

The drummer used to be in a band called Lethargy from the Buffalo/Rochester area, before he moved down south to join Today Is The Day. If you want to check out Lethargy:

I dont think that site has been updated since 2000

Bran is good, but i think theres alot better drummers out there. Especially guys like dirk ver bueren (sp?) from soilwork and scarve. that guy is just absolutely disgusting.

Er, yeah, I mean... technically, Dirk's superior, but.. .its not a competitive thread.. it's just about Bran.

Mastodon is fucking awesome, recorded and live. The drumming is one of my favorite parts of the band. The way he does a fill every 4 bars keeps it interesting. I'm not a drummer, but I think he has a lot of talent to be really dead on, because the style he plays, if he was off, it would stick out a ton.

I guess with this guy it's really about his style. Taste and the way his drums sound when he hits 'em. Kinda like Matt Cameron.
