Megadeth's new album is called Super Collider

When it boils right down to it, most fans will only listen to artist that agree with their own personal viewpoints.

I don't think this is the case. Hell, most of the time people don't bother looking closely at the lyrics of any given album. I can listen to Redemption or Theocracy without agreeing with their political and religious views. It's when those opposing viewpoints are expressed as obnoxiously as Mustaine's in this case that I draw the line.

I wish this band would end so Broaderick could return to Jag Panzer and they can become an active band again.
Though if things work out well with Joey Tafolla that would be great too.

I like some Megadeth but overall couldn't care any less about them existing as a going concern in the business.

I've always been a sucker for lyrics, because I like to see what makes people tick. That's probably one of the main draws for me to this genre. For instance, I've always thought Testament was cool, because of their political lyrics. They appealed to me even when I was an early teen due to this reason. Honestly, I've not looked at Redemption's lyrics and FatesFan will probably give me a hard time for that! :) Now you have me intrigued, so I'll take a closer look.

And I have no idea what Dio said about Christianity, but he was probably right. BECAUSE HE'S DIO.

Let's just say that Dio was no way a Christian in any shape, form or fashion. I've listened and watched some interviews of him over the years, plus it's pretty obvious in some of his songs. With that said, I've always thought he's one of the most talented song writers...ever! Below are the lyrics to Jesus, Mary & The Holy Ghost, which is one example.

Prime time
Nursery rhyme
Did you see the teacher
Sister
Black and white
What she's gonna to do

They say eye for eye, tooth for tooth
But don't hurt your brother
Cross-road, overload

Oh, I, I testify
They just showed me Mary
She was stoned, stoned, danger zone
There was nothing in her eyes

And then there, there in the air
Nailed to the cross was Jesus
Cross-road, overload

Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray my soul to keep away
From the holy spirit, holy ghost
They're hiding in the dark

Oh, nightmare, electric chair
You might not get to heaven
Bad boys, shout for joy
Watch him to cry

Prime time
Nursery rhyme
Love just needs religion
Cross-road, overload

Heh... I'll never forget at PPV. I was interviewing Pain of Salvation at the lobby of the Fairfield Inn (remember that hotel)? It was a super cool, very deep interview about Be (which had just come out). Some drunken dumbass decided to sit near us and just kind of start paying attention to the conversation (without realizing that it was an interview). Daniel started talking about how important the lyrical content was for Be (and most of the band's catalogue in fact), when the guy interrupts and goes:

"I don't know man, I totally disagree with you. They can be talking about whatever the fuck they want. I don't care about the lyrics, all I care about is to listen to good metal. If the music is good, then the lyrics should never ever matter..."

And Daniel had the best "Uh...wtf" look in his face I've ever seen, goes...

"Right."

I'm pretty open minded about opinions, and understand everyone comes from a different place, has different values etc. In fact, I hate the idea of only associating with people who believe the same things you do. You don't learn anything that way.

However, the people comparing comments that criticize some aspects of christianity or some aspects America while still having respect for those people with some of the more blatantly racist and homophobic things I've ever heard a musician (let alone a professional musician with millions of sales behind him) say in my entire life, as though they are the same thing should be no less than ashamed of themselves.

His rants (as of late in particular) are disgusting and downright moronic, but I try to not let that stop me from getting into music.
Honestly, I wish I could. I'm not sure why it is, but I just can't seem to separate the two.

However, I think Megadeth has been terrible for the vast majority of its career and only put out two good albums (Countdown and Peace Sells), so no care ever re: this album.
I'm a bit more fond of their discography than you... but ultimately, yeah... I'll ignore this disc more because of music quality than politics. When it comes to relevant bands, who are currently creating great music, Megadeth just isn't part of that conversation any longer.

When it boils right down to it, most fans will only listen to artist that agree with their own personal viewpoints. Most of these fans consider themselves "open minded" too, which I find hypocritical.
I don't think it's an issue of being open-minded or close-minded. Being open-minded is about being willing to accept new information, new experiences, etc. It's about not allowing yourself to become dogmatic in your positions. Being close-minded, would be deciding not to listen to what Dave had to say in the first place, because his opinion threatens your viewpoint. However, that's not what I've done. I listened to his views, considered them, decided he's views are mindless, and subsequently elected not to support his endeavors with my money.

As for being hypocritical... wouldn't it be more hypocritical for me (as a unabashed liberal) to support artists with my money, who I know will turn around and contribute that money to causes I disagree with?

I guess it's better for artists to keep their personal viewpoints to themselves for business sake, but that's not fair to them as artists.
Using the platform that celebrity provides, to put forth a political view has always been and always will be a risk for artists.

One of many things I dont understand about the metal fans who have to be so intricate about everything and over analyze it. Just crank it to fucking 10 and enjoy it already.
I think it's like so many other things when it comes to music, we all have different aspects which resonate with us. It's why you and I might both love Power Metal Band X, but completely disagree on Power Metal Band Y. It's all just a matter of personal preference; someone of us don't care what an artist thinks or says, some do.

NOTE: "To Hell with the Devil" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

All the Dave Mustaine shitting going on...
just wondering, have any of you ever met Mustaine? Everyone is entitled to thier opinion, and I don't agree with all Dave's rantings either, but I can say from having met him twice (once when I was in 1997 when I was 14, once in 2004 when I was 21) and he seriously is one of the nicest people I've met in the music industry.

He's no Ken Hammer, but he seems like a goood guy.

I'm a Roman Catholic conservative, but yet I listen to heavy metal music which by and large hates my belief system. It's just entertainment. Also, I love comic books and of course Hollywood movies which is hugely liberal. I'm tolerant. That's part of the hypocrisy of the left. They preach tolerance, but spew hatred and intolerance. That being said, I'm very much looking forward to Super Collider. I loved Th1rt3en, but hopefully SC will have more speed.

Kind of ironic considering your avatar.
Were I to ever form a band and try to sell albums to people who do not think the way I do, your comment would have more merit. Otherwise, the equivalency (and irony) does not exist.

My avatar is ironic in an of itself. Which is why I use it.

DM has the right to say anything he wants of course. It is a free country still...I believe that it would be a much freer country if people who had his opinions packed their bags and left...

I have met him. He seems like a lovely person. However, there are lot's of people who are quite nice and bat-shit crazy.

I have two comments on this...

1. Lyrics are an interesting thing. It seems that in Metal, like with most genres of music, people just don't care about the message. Case in point, I have a Muslim friend who listens to Arghoslent. I think it all comes down to what weight you put on the message.

2. The overarching argument you make, is one I've seen here before. But it's not an apples and oranges comparison. First of all, much of Black and Death Metal lyrics are pure schtick. Neither the artists nor the fans believe them. They are intended as pure fantasy, in much the same way a horror movie is. Hell, Slayer's frontman is a practicing Catholic. But more to the point, there isn't a Black Metal voting block in this country trying to push forward a Black Metal agenda. There won't be a Black Metal candidate up on the podium during the 2016 Presidential debates. However, when Dave puts forth his political agenda, or even when Matt puts forth his beliefs within Theocracy, there is an agenda behind it. There are people nodding along in agreement, pulling the voting lever to push forward these belief systems, in a way that has a real and quantifiable impact on our lives. Now I'm not suggesting that Dave's lyrics are actually swaying votes, merely that his positions reflect a real and actual set of positions in this country. And that makes his message much different than Powerwolf's.

LOL...I love that song too! I would've never taken you for a Stryper fan though. I figured they'd be too wimpy! :)

Hell, Slayer's frontman is a practicing Catholic.

I would love to sit down with Tom and talk about this! To me Kerry has always come across as a jerk, but Tom seems like he would be a cool guy to sit down and talk with.

I am sort of on the fence with this issue. It is hard to make truth statements given the various shades of grey on this issue. On the whole, I can overlook an artist's personal opinions as long as the music is good. However, that is not to say that it does not bother me when people say outright stupid and offensive things. For me it is like the analogy of a star athlete on a sports team. If they act in a certain way that distracts from the team, it will be tolerated as long as they perform on the field. The second they stop performing well, they become a burden rather than an asset. This ratio is obviously influenced by the severity of the stupidity and the quality of performance. Someone like a Mel Gibson or Ted Nugent would have to put out a piece of timeless transcendent art for me to even give it a sniff. While for a run of the mill douche nozzle like Yngwie would just have to put out a great album.

But I think this is a moot point since the likelihood of Dave putting out good or great music is not very likely. In my view they have not put out a good album in 16 years and a great album in 22 years.

Nahhh... I grew up on 80s Hair Metal. While I always hated Stryper's ballads, I totally loved their more rocking songs.

I think it's the difference between being an idiot and an asshole. Yngwie is definitely the former. By and large, so is Dave. Ted is an asshole. However, in Ted's defense, he's always been an asshole. He's just added being an asshole about politics to his assholian repertoire.

Churches were burned down in Norway because of Christianity. Am I right? You rip Mustaine and Nugent. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean they're an asshole or whatever. I disagree with you, but you are no asshole in my opinion. I talked to you and Paula at the ATL and PHL airports last year. I've talked to you at PP a couple of times and we both have the "pleasure" of knowing crazy Mike.
