Hi all! I wanted to delurk for a minute to mention a new prog metal band here in Detroit called Mellotron.
I've seen them a few times and they put on a very high energy performance at each show. Their original material is very strong. It's heavy, which is perfect for a live setting, but also melodic and has softer passages as well. They also do a *great* cover King's X - We Were Born to be Loved and a decent cover of Rush - Subdivisions.
They just released their first disc (which I assume will eventually be for sale on their website, mellotronmetal.com), and after a few listens, I definitely think they have promise. The vocals are a little hit and miss on the disc, as they can be live, but I think that'll come with time. Three guys in the band do the backing vocals and it doesn't always sound perfect, but when it does, it really works.
I think they're opening for King's X on December 10th for those in the Detroit area. Maybe I'll see some of you there.
Chris
