Since i always jam with that classic song by MERAUDER called "Downfall of Christ", i decided to record a quick guitar cover and see how my guitar tone works for it since my own songs can be somewhat similar in terms of style at times.

So basically this is the original mix (from the Master Killer album reissue), with the original guitars, and i added my own guitars, 2 guitars (one middy, one scooped), hard-panned on each side. I couldn't remove the original guitars so you still hear the original guitars slightly in my version, but then again my guitars are predominant.

I'm still using my trusted EMG81/85-loaded Schecter Hellraiser C1-FR, plugged directly into ENGL SE 6L6 with the Torpedo VB-101, which is a hardware loadbox+cab/mic/miking simulator (see other related threads here : http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/...-101-hardware-loadbox-cab-mic-miking-sim.html)

Keep in mind the clip is sloppily played, esp. during the slow up&downstroke break in the middle. This is just a tone test for kicks, nothing meant to be released or anything like that.

Clips (one with the full mix, one with guitars only) and detailed signal chain info can be found here :

Compared to my previous clips from 2009-12-22 (the ones using the ENGL412V30 cab + Blue Dragonfly Condenser mic), the differences are the following :

* the master volume on my amp is slightly higher
* i dropped the Exciter value significantly on the torpedo, since it was adding too much junk to the tone
* no post-EQ on guitars (not even HP-LP) in Cubase this time

Let me know what you guys think.

I like. Nice playing.

Perhaps if you used a mid/side manipulating tool on the original track, to remove the 'side'.. it would be an interesting way to hear it.

Thanks !

I'm interested in this mid/side removing thingie you're mentioning since i don't have the bass/drums original tracks alone for this song, only the full mix.
Any idea about how to do that ?

Free plug. Press 'side mute', or turn the 'side gain' knob down to taste.

:)

Gave it a try on one of my songs, works fine to tame the sides (even if 100% hardpanned guitars you can still hear some of them even with "sides muted" mode). I'm gonna repost the Merauder cover using it soon.

Then i'm gonna do another cover (something more rock-ish and melodic) with the same trick, but with remiking this time (using the same power amp out takes signal through different combinations of cabs/mics/miking).

Thanks again for the info !
