Mercenary- The Hours That Remain

I'll admit that on 11 Dreams too. There's some songs I really like, but probably half of the tracks are forgettable to me, yet I don't know why when they sound great.

Wow, listening to a bunch of garbage, huh ? Just kidding ... different strokes for different folks.

I don't dislike it....its just not any better than their last 3 albums and from the hype it was getting i expected more....it all sounds too familiar to me.

Wow, that's high praise, Glenn! I remember how much you were praising 11 Dreams when it came out; you said it was easily one of your faves for that year. Really looking forward to the CD and the show. :headbang: (Gee, ya think?)

Keeping in mind that I wasn't a huge fan of "11 Dreams", I like the new one more. How much more? I can't say yet. However, as Glenn said, I like that the vocals stay out of the higher registers. It sounds much more natural. As with "11 Dreams", Mercenary's songwriting has continued to mature. The lead play and flow of "Lost Reality" is a good example of this. I'm guessing I'll enjoy this even more cranked up on my car stereo than on my iPod. It definitely sounds like a CD that would do well at high volumes.

If I know my fellow PP forum members well, I'm betting Bear will dry hump this CD after one listen.:loco:

I've been thru it a couple times now, and it's starting to hit the mark with me. I miss Kral's vocals some, but I also think Mikael's vocals are better than ever. The loss of Kral definately hasn't killed the band or anything. The songs are strong, and the singing is well done in all phases. This one is going to have to go a long ways to pass up 11 Dreams, but it's got a chance. It's a very worthy successor to that great album.

11 Dreams just seems more diverse to me overall than The Hours, mainly because of some slower tempo material like Sharpen The Edges, Times Without Changes, and the remake of Music Nonstop. That kind of helped breakup the more extreme material.

All in all I think the folks that enjoyed 11 Dreams will also enjoy The Hours That Remain. It should go over pretty well with the fans.

While I don't disagree that "11 Dreams" was more diverse, I don't think you need breather songs on this CD, because there's nothing overly aggressive about this disc. I think you'd agree, "The Hours that Remain" is light years from "Everblack", in terms of overall heaviness.

Yeah, what Zod said (even though I just got done calling him "clueless" in another thread, LOL). There's certainly nothing extreme about 11 Dreams, unless death vocals = extreme, in your opinion. It is a very diverse disc, though... I love how they go from Evergrey-ish stuff, to melodic death and metalcore-ish stuff, to mixtures in between. It was my favorite album of '04.

Yeah, I can agree with that. While quite heavy and ripping at times, The Hours That Remain" as a whole isn't nearly as extreme as Everblack, or even some of the more extreme tracks on 11 Dreams. It's a fine disc .. I'm enjoying it. Some of the folks that were on the fence with 11 Dreams might find this disc more appealing because of it's "less" extreme nature, and I would think most that enjoyed 11 Dreams will still find this one enjoyable.

How about the first part of "Year of the Plague?"
My comment was in comparison to their roots. There are certainly aggressive moments on this disc. And in respect to the types of bands that ProgPower typically hosts, it's a very aggressive disc. However, when compared to "Everblack" or compared to much of what I listen to, I wouldn't call this CD overly aggressive. That said, I like it.

I consider shrieking to be pretty extreme, and there is a ton of shrieking on 11 Dreams. There is less of that vocal style on The Hours That Remain.

By the way, 11 Dreams was also my favorite of 04', and might be my favorite disc of this decade so far.
