Metal bands that have broadened your musical palette?

Emperor..through them I found out about Mortis, Peccatum and eventually Hagalaz Runedance and Star of Ash.

The experimental side projects are the best.

i got into metal through Dimmu and opeth and through bands like Mayhem and Decapiated i got inot the more harde variants of balck/death. Poison of the well got me into metalcore Carcass (swansong era) got me into Thrash and Napalm Death got me into grindcore.

its not all been good thought i bought a Camel album as Opeth apparently are heavily influenced by them and it turned out to be extremely twee synths played over unrelated annoiyng guitar lines.

Im going to give it to my brother for christmas and say i thought Camel were a nu Metal band

Well, if weren’t for Opeth, I wouldn’t be here. They brought me into metal and pretty much began my musical metamorphosis. They are still one of my favorite bands, but I don’t listen to them quite as much. This band got me into everything that is metal.

Agalloch totally changed my view of music. Not so much from their music, (it is incredible) but from what and who they were influenced by and into in interviews. I mean, I grew fascinated with this band (still very much am) and I thought “Wow, they like a lot of music other than metal, perhaps I should check it out.” I then checked out all these bands they were raving about and, needless to say, my musical horizons have broadened substantially. I’ve said here before that I’m listening to a lot less metal nowadays, and it’s thanks to this band. I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad thing; it is what it is. The band also allowed me to like more minimalist styles (whereas prior I wanted everything to be “technically proficient”). I am much happier listening to things because I actually like it with out my mind being clouded with this notion that music must be technical.

Ulver has totally rearranged my view of electronic music. Before I hated it and I never even gave it a shot, but now I am now very much into the darker styles of ambient and electronic music.

Atmosphere introduced me to (underground) hip-hop. It actually conveys meaning in the words and the music is pretty cool too. I’m not huge into hip-hop at this moment, but I’m still looking into it.

Musical tastes should always be evolving (as everything else in life). It keeps things interesting and vigorous.

For some reason, the first band that comes to mind is Burzum. I took a chance and bought "Det Som En Gang Var," and since then it gave me a new perspective on just how broad and experimental the ENTIRE metal scene really is. Plus, it got me into a lot of prog and ambient metal...
Also Anathema for getting me into doom metal...

I used to hate metal and listened to rock, industrial, synth pop, electronic music, etc. so my palette was only limited against metal, country, and hip hop.

Metal obviously didn't make me like country or hip-hop. No, the only style of music I previously didn't listen to that I started because of a metal band was emo due to maudlin of the Well who has quite a large emo aspect to their music.
