I just decided to post today because it's too cold to do anything else.

Neither do I; once I D/L them, I convert them to 192kbs AAC files via iTunes. Sounds near the same on the iPod.

I get that you change the format, but why the bit rate? What does that buy you?

Maybe nothing, lol, but it does seem (to my ears) "normalized" to all the other songs on the iPod. There's no discernable difference in the volume or quality from the other 192 AAC files.

Ugh... You get a severe quality DECREASE with conversion from one format to another... You get exactly two things by converting 128 kbps MP3 to 192 kbps AAC: 1) decreased sound quality, 2) increased file size.

If you cannot discern a difference, there is really no reason that you should encode to 192 in the first place.

When I rip my own CDs to put on my iPod, I put them at 192. Since I can't control how others provide them for D/L, I do it to "normalize" all files at the same rate. That's all.

Yeah, I guess in retro, going 128 > 192 is stupid. I will continue to take 200+ VBR-encoded stuff and compress it further to 192 though. Simply for space reasons.
